About the Course
Spend 3 glorious days at Flatford Mill on this acrylic painting residential art holiday.
Thinking of having a go with oils but not sure? Acrylic techniques are the same, building layers from dark to light. They are a good stepping stone or media in their own right. You will learn to use subjects as inspiration in an impressionistic style. Come and enjoy learning with Linda using a variety of subjects including landscape, still life and figures! Linda’s teaching is not step by step so she can tutor a group of mixed abilities, she will demonstrate a technique or subject which you will then have a go at, she encourages students to be inspired by, not to copy, she believes if everyone produces the same painting she has failed. Her painting techniques follow traditional rules which she believes you have to know before you break them. Tuition will include perspective, tones, complimentary colour work and colour mixing, working in the studio from photograph references, still life and maybe outside depending on the weather!
Linda Matthews has worked as a full time artist and tutor for 11 years - her studio and gallery are in the Norfolk Broads. Inspired by everything around her, she enjoys sharing the essentials of watercolour in the studio so you can experience fully the freedom of painting from life - en plein air - out of doors. She works professionally in most media. Her philosophy for painting is ‘Wherever you look there is something to paint. You can never be bored with a pencil, a sketchbook and a paintbox’.

Flatford Mill lies at the heart of the Dedham Vale, on the banks of the River Stour near the Suffolk-Essex border. The Centre buildings, particularly the Mill and Willy Lott’s House, are instantly recognisable since they feature in many paintings by John Constable. The rich mosaic of lowland landscapes, wildlife habitats and places of historic interest are all reflected in our extensive programme of courses.
The Centre is located between Colchester and Ipswich and is about 10 miles from each, approximately 2 miles from the A12.
