About the Course

WordPress org is the worlds biggest publishing platform, making it easy for anyone to publish online, it now powers millions of websites. Wordpress org allows you to create your own site quickly and easily, use countless plug-in tools, functions, custom code, managed content, online sales and grow your audience.

WordPress is the most popular website builder in the world. This Web Design course takes you through the basics and covers all the useful features including how to use the fundamental tools. At the start of course, the tutor shows you how to obtain a website address (domain name) and install WordPress locally so that you’re ready to build a WordPress website that will work on different devices. You’ll add pages to your website and set up a blog/news page. We’ll then move onto inserting and editing content such as text, images and videos. It’s important to ensure your website is found by Google searches and that you understand how to build and change your website so it ranks well in Google and other search engines. Therefore this course is also an introduction to search engine optimisation techniques as well as how to add social media to your website. This beginners WordPress org course is taught in small groups and you do not require any prior knowledge of WordPress to attend this course. If you are not entitled to a reduced fee but are finding it difficult to pay for your course in one go, we can offer a Staged Payment Agreement to split the costs into three payments if your course(s) costs £200 or more. Please talk to a member of enrolment staff about how your payments would be structured. You are liable for all payments under this agreement, even if you stop attending your class.

Class format and activities

The one major difference between WordPress com and WordPress org is the method of hosting your website. With WordPress org, you can have your own domain name, host your own blog or website and have full control of your blog/website. As for WordPress com, by default, your domain name will include “WordPress com” as part of your blog/website name and also you cannot upload any custom themes, plugins or modify the code behind your site. The class will be taught via a mix of presentation, active learning exercises, demonstrations, hand-outs, step-by-step instructions, pair working and group discussion. Guidance will be given to help develop ideas and skills and project work assigned to help you progress. The classes are informal and allow for question and answer sessions, technical advice and support depending on your needs, as well as for assessment and feedback on your progress. In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment. Entry requirements
A keen interest in the subject is key to your success and the ability to attend the sessions regularly in order to get the most out of the course. As part of the course you will be asked to read tutorials, take notes, listen to instructions and discuss related topics, therefore students should have a reasonable level of skill in speaking, reading and writing in English. This course can be taken alongside with any of our digital design, film and photography courses and will help you to gain the confidence you need when working with digital tools for design and publication

What you need to know before you enrol
The Course will be taught on Apple mac computers in a bright, comfortable modern studio. It would be helpful if you have some familiarity with Macintosh computers and know how to use standard menus and commands. However this is not an essential requirement as these skills can be picked up during the course. As part of the course you will be asked to read tutorials, take notes and discuss related topics. As this is a computer-based course students will be encouraged to be aware of fatigue and eye strain and to take breaks when necessary. You may wish to revise and practise at home to reinforce what you have learned during the lesson. Information about computers and relevant software will be provided by the tutor.

What you will need for your class
It would be useful if you already had an idea of the subject matter on which you would like to base your website/blog. It would be helpful for you to bring a pen and notepad, as you may wish to take notes. Also recommended is a storage device such as USB Memory stick (minimum 8GB) or mini-hard drive. This is for storage of media during the course and of your work at the end. It would be beneficial to your studies if you possess the software for use at home. As a student of Morley College you are entitled to a discount on Adobe CC Software. Your tutor can advise you on how to apply for this.
