I have just completed a 2 day course with Gary after really enjoying 2 days wood turning with him last year. I am even more hooked on wood turning now and I'm determined to get my own lathe. Gary was extremely helpful, patient and allowed me to complete the projects that I wanted to do. Gary is an excellent tutor and I would recommend him to anyone wanting to try out a new craft.
What a fantastic two days! I had not been near a lathe since my school days in the 1970's and so I embarked upon this two day introduction course with a little trepidation, there was no need as Gary was the consummate host and teacher. From start to finish Gary gives you clear explanations and directions, he then demonstrates each stage of a task and in doing so discusses the equipment and tools and the different options that are available. You then get to try your hand under his watchful eye. There are no time pressures, quite the reverse as taking your time is important. Gary's observations are not intrusive in anyway and at times you forget he is there, that is until you need him to help rescue your work. I was amazed to end the first day having turned and finished three small pieces (even if they did not quite match Gary's examples). The first day having been taken up with spindle turning the second was dedicated to turning a bowl. Lunch, tea and coffee are all provided and you also get to meet Gary's lovely parents as his workshop is at the bottom of their garden. If you have the slightest inkling that you might like to try woodturning this course cannot be recommended highly enough.
I have just been on the 2 day course with Gary and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone. Gary is extremely patient and knowledgeable and I was really pleased with what I was able to create in such a short period of time which is testament to his teaching skills. After a week at work it was a most relaxing and enjoyable weekend and a great introduction to turning. This was a birthday gift from my wife and I will always remember it.
I have recently undertaken a two day beginners course with Gary and came away firmly believing that I had achieved something. One on one was a excellent way to start with Gary working on his lathe to demonstrate the use of the chisels and positioning on the lathe itself, working on my own alongside him. He watches you carefully to ensure lessons have been learned and doesn't interfere except if asked or when positioning needs to be corrected. It was a wonderful experience and a joy to work with a true professional and the finished products were richly admired by the family If you are a true beginner or one that needs to develop further the skills leaned in earlier years Gary is your man.
I was most impressed with his quiet dedicated manner and the way in which he made the whole experience fun. I'm looking for the family to give me a lathe for Christmas so that I can quickly put the training into practice.
I did this 2-day course in May 2015. The reason it has taken me over 3 months to post a review is because the training Gary gave me has encouraged me to dive in, buy a lathe and some tools and get woodturning myself!
Gary is a good teacher, explaining the tools and the techniques of turning. I found the course to be well-paced and the projects worked on a good introduction. The workshop is small and well equipped and there are a variety of woods to try turning with.
Since I got my own equipment (based on a list of supplied during the course), Gary has continued to offer support by answering some of my beginners questions.
