About the Course
Your holiday begins with a chance to have a paddle in a similar canoe to the one you will build. You will stay in one of our wooden cabins by the river Wreake, and will be given as much ( or as little ) assistance in building your canoe as you feel you require. After you complete your canoe, we will launch it here and you will have time to enjoy it on the river here before taking it home on the roof of your car.
We use mainly hand tools throughout the process. You will start with sheets of marine and birch plywood, spruce for seats and ash for gunwales, and I will work with you at every stage. Most people complete their canoe on Day 3 or 4 of their week, and spend the rest of the week enjoying their canoe. You can opt at that stage to take our paddle making courses; please see our other listings on CraftCourses.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
All the materials for your canoe are included, and I provide safety wear and use of all the tools you need. I will introduce you to the amazing Japanese pullsaw, and remind me to give you yours at the end of the week.. you will love it by then!
Accommodation in one of our home made self catering cabins is also included, as is tea and coffee throughout.
You can use our canoes on the river here whenever you like throughout your stay, and of course by the end of the week you will be using your own brand new canoe
The main canoe we build is the Lakota, which we developed here at Birchcanoes in conjunction with Jem Watercraft. There are other options if you prefer; you can decide after you have had a paddle on the river in our canoes.
Course dates are flexible; please get in touch for the next available date.
