I would recommend this course in a heartbeat!
Graham is a highly skilled and incredibly patient teacher. He is very kind natured, and as charming as his country home and wood-shop out in the New Forest. He took the time to explain every step of each process and I ended up making a candlestick and a bowl that I never would have imagined I could make.
I will be booking another session!

A fun filled day, thoroughly enjoyed it! Graham and his partner were super accommodating to us both and Graham has LOTS of expertise to pass on! Cannot recommend enough and I will 100% book in a future course when I have practiced my skills learnt from the day. Thanks Graham!
Laura Jones - - #12090
I booked the day course (for two) as a birthday surprise for my other half and we both thoroughly enjoyed the day. Graham is an excellent teacher, providing an informative and inspiring experience. He imparts the right mix of encouragement and instruction to give complete beginners the confidence to get stuck in. He seems adaptable; aware; knowledgeable; and experienced at engaging with people at the right level. We became completely absorbed in using the lathe and tools, and were delighted to come away with good-sized useable and attractive bowls. We acquired an awareness of the skills we need to progress, respect for the machine, tools and materials. We have the confidence to use the lathe my dad gave us. Most importantly, we felt genuinely welcome by a lovely couple. We came away from a fun day feeling relaxed, refreshed and enthusiastic about our ability to take up wood turning. We planned the Saturday into a weekend break, which was a real treat. In future we would also be happy to drive the 2 hours each way as the day is well worth it.
Bridget and Neill - - #12085
Graham is a very good teacher, who took us methodically through the process of making a bowl, which turned out far better than I had expected. There was plenty of tea and coffee, a great home-cooked light lunch, and a warm workshop on a cold day. I learned a lot, and Graham was extremely patient, taking a genuine interest in the people on the course, and giving us beginners good advice for getting set up as woodturners ourselves. A very enjoyable and productive day.
Greg - - #11999
Very informative on all things related to turning, all the equipment is quality and the workshop is comfortable. I had a fantastic day, and am looking forward to putting all the new techniques I’ve learned to practice.
Michael Cotton - - #11762
I booked a day woodturning with Graham for my Dad's 70th birthday present and we had a wonderful time! Graham is very friendly, supportive and a good teacher. He gave us just the right amount of instruction and we had so much practical making time. We both made a candle stick and a bowl which looked far more professional than we could have imagined. The studio you work in is lovely and warm thanks to a little wood burning stove and the equipment you use is good quality. We were given lots of safety equipment too. Lunch was a lovely bowl of soup with lots of fresh bread. We were made very welcome by Graham, his wife (who kindly showed us around her onsite hedgehog rescue centre) and the dogs, it was all charmingly bonkers in a very good way! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Graham to anyone and both my Dad and I agreed we would love to go back for another day to learn even more. Joanne and Alan
Woodturning Day - - #11720
I have only had my lathe for a few months, and despite trying to teach myself from online videos I had hit a 'limit' as to what i could do. Grahams teaching method makes it easy to understand how and why the wood behaves as it does, I am planning another session after practice, practice, practice! I would recommend Graham to anyone, i came away with a completely new approach in using some of my tools, and a lovely bowl that now takes centre stage in our kitchen. Thank you again Graham I will certainly be in touch again.
Andy Cross - - #11651
A great day learning all about the art of wood turning. As a beginner I am now confident to get my own lathe in action. Lots of useful information from Graham. Recommend this days course to anyone interested in trying out wood turning. Hope to be back for another course in the future.
Richard Hastings - - #10516
Great days tuition. Graham was very knowledgeable and helpful, giving a good overview of Wood Turning at his well equipped workshop. He guided the 2 of us though basic wood turning techniques and we came away with a candle stick and a bowl.
I would recommend this course to anyone wishing either to have a go at wood turning or anyone wishing to develop it as a hobby.
Matthew Jones - - #10425
Very good, thorough, informed and interested tutoring in the basics and not-so-basics of wood-turning. Excellent matching of information to the customers - proper conversation rather than a prescribed course. I'll be signing up again soon.
Stephen Reynolds - - #10417
Received a 1-day beginners course for myself and a friends as a birthday present for my wife having had no previous experience of wood turning. However, we have been on craft courses (pottery and glass blowing) previously.
We had a magnificent day - Graham is a superb and knowledgeable teacher; he was able to judge our ability, set achievable but challenging targets and had a patient approach to keeping us on track.
A simple but delicious home cooked lunch was provided and both Graham and his wife were terrific company during our meal. Their attitude was relaxed and informal; they made us feel very welcome and gave us a genuine break from the rigours of a normal weekend.
We left proudly clutching the candlesticks and bowls we had made during the day which everyone is highly impressed with! However, Graham also left us with a better understanding of the craft, a deeper knowledge of how to work with wood and some samples of wood to fuel our first forays into whittling.
I have no hesitation in recommending Graham to anyone how wishes to learn more about this absorbing and rewarding activity.
Alun Fowler - - #9798
Graham is really knowledgeable and experienced and this shows in his teaching..... A very good day and leant a great deal,so much in fact I am looking to buy a lathe for myself as I enjoyed it that much.
Thank you Graham....
William McElroy - - #9728
I had a very helpful and enjoyable day with Graham. He made me very welcome and feel at ease. I am a novice turner and wanted to develop my skills. Graham was very sympathetic to my needs, suggesting and demonstrating techniques that really helped me overcome difficulties I was having. He has an excellent teaching style , informative, knowledgeable, supportive yet giving you room to practice and learn by doing it yourself. Coffee, tea and biscuits on tap and a tasty lunch sitting in his lovely garden. I would certainly recommend a course with Graham
Tony - - #9381
I was given a days woodturning tuition as a present & it proved to be one of the best presents I have ever been given. As soon as I went through the door I was made very welcome by Graham & his wife plus the two dogs! After a cup of tea & a general talk about the basics of woodturning it was into the workshop & after being shown the around the lathes, tools etc it was hands on & with Graham's expert tuition plus a lot of patience I managed to turn a bowl & ring stand. Am now bitten by the bug thanks to Graham's skill & enthusiasm & now intend to take it further. I have no hesitation in recommending a woodturning course with Graham.
Terry Nash - - #9169
This was my first attempt at wood turning and I cannot recommend the day highly enough. Graham was very quick to put the two of us (both novices) at our ease, and was both patient and encouraging throughout the day. He clearly knows his stuff and is a great teacher. I came away with 2 things to show for the day and a definite interest in pursuing the craft further. Thank you Graham - a fantastic day!
Dave Talbot - - #9163
Just returned from a Memorial Day with Graham I am a complete novice and was given this day's tuition as a present from my daughter I'm now in my seventies and wasn't sure what to expect.Right from the start graham put us at ease with his patience and knowledge of woodturning explaining types of wood and tools by the end of the day l came away with a bowl and ring stand i would thoroughly recommend anyone taking this full on course 5 stars not enough
Denis Rudall - - #9157
I had a really great day with Graham doing a "refresher" after 30 years of absence from woodturning. There were just 2 of us on the course so we had very personal attention. Graham's teaching style is very relaxed so he put me at my ease quickly which meant that I was learning in a very enjoyable way.
I came away with a nice cedar bowl and as a bonus he sharpened my (30 year old) chisels for me.
Bob Halliday - - #8960
Both Jack and I had an excellent morning with Graham Turner on 19/4/17 and we are more than happy to recommend the course. I think I can speak for Jack when I say that both of us doubted that we could produce a bowl of the standard Graham showed us at the start but with his excellent tuition we were both proved very wrong and the results sit proudly on display on our coffee table. Graham has an easy teaching style with great attention to detail which gives you the confidence to produce great results. We enjoyed it so much that we are now looking to book a further session in October. Thank you Graham.
Chris and Jack Walker - - #8820
Last Saturday was spent at Graham's workshop and both Rob, my husband, and I had the most wonderful day.
We not only made two delightful wooden bowls, but enjoyed the learning process immensely, using a lathe and various wood working tools.
Graham is a very good and understanding teacher.
We were treated to a delightful lunch in the garden, and enjoyed conversation with Graham and his wife Chris.
Altogether a fantastic experience. I would thoroughly recommend a day there and hope to go again before too long.
Cal Craven Francis - - #8815
I suspected that two days in Graham's company was going to be enjoyable the moment he greeted me with a warm handshake and the friendliest welcome. Chris and Graham are delightful hosts and really made me feel at home. We took tea and coffee breaks together, sitting in their beautiful and interesting garden which is so wildlife friendly.
Graham's teaching style is relaxed and informal. He is supportive and his encouragement made my introduction to woodturning a great pleasure, so much so that I am now looking forward to my next visit, when I hope to benefit from his mentoring as I progress from beginner. I was particularly impressed by the effort Graham takes to ensure that his students experience success from the outset. Similarly he takes a lot of trouble to ensure that safety is never compromised and I am confident that while I have a lot to learn the foundation that Graham has given me is solid. I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend him to any beginner who would find a visit to his gallery inspirational.
Frank Renouf - - #8298
A very enjoyable and informative 2 days spent in the company of Graham who certainly exceeded all my expectations in terms of providing an excellent learning forum for those thinking of woodturning.
Graham proved to be a very capable, helpful, patient and knowledgable tutor who made the course a truly memorable experience.I would certainly recommend Graham to anyone starting out or wishing to develop their woodturning skills mainly due to his welcoming, informal, sociable manner that created a relaxed learning environment.
Graham also went the extra mile by providing me with some invaluable advice about an old wood lathe that I had recently inherited from my father. He explained the set up procedure and where to source spare parts required to get the machine working.
My thanks also go to his wife Chris who provided a lovely lunch on each of the two days and keeping me supplied with regular cups of coffee and biscuits.
James Airey - - #8208
Fantastic day, I`m a complete novice , but Graham was very good went over the H& S then on to using the lathe, showed how to make a bowl, then made one my self.
Ready for another lesson now to progress further still. Lots of tea and coffee and a lovely lunch what more could you want
Bob Wilson - - #8008
A very relaxed and enjoyable way to learn, with very good tuition. I had a great morning, and hope to be back soon to continue learning!
Richard Pegram - - #7961
It was a tremendous day for a complete beginner. Graham gave me plenty of attention and also left me to work at things at my own pace. A well planned set of activities gave me a good experience of method and tools - all done in a pleasant and supportive atmosphere. Explanations given and questions answered, Graham provided a day's activity that was challenging without being too serious. A solid, professional introduction to woodturning. I'd recommend it.
Richard Cady - - #7943
A brilliant day exploring the different techniques involved in woodturning. Graham was very friendly and an excellent tutor giving plenty of advice to make sure you were using the equipment correctly. I would recommend the course for anyone looking to get into woodturning or having a refresher session.
Alex Dooley - - #7933
We had a thoroughly enjoyable day with Graham, who is an excellent teacher with lots of patience. Despite our inexperience and initial apprehension we produced two bowls we were very proud of. I think we may now be hooked on wood turning, and hope to return for a second course. Graham's own work is also very impressive and provides some great designs to aspire to. We bought three of the items and just need to find some space in our house for more. Thank you for a great experience!

Reg and Jackie Manser - - #7680
Graham's calm methodical approach, together with years of experience and a good amount of enthusiasm made this one day course an absolute delight. His well-equipped workshop, choice of wood and various "design opportunities" helped me create a bowl I was very proud of. I was made to feel very welcome, and a hearty lunch beside the Rayburn made for a fantastic day all round. Thank you for a wonderful birthday treat!
Chris Bowden - - #7482
The results of a half day of tuition were beyond expectation. Graham's simple, calming approach - and the trust that he showed in his raw novices as they tackled their first piece - not only meant that we had the opportunity to learn, hands on quickly but also to actually produce something that had the capacity to surprise the whole family. He instilled confidence throughout. A first rate experience, a great introduction to wood turning and well worth a long drive (twice in my case!) to get there.
David Williams-Jones - - #6825
Best birthday present ever. A day with Graham left me with a wealth of knowledge and confidence on the lathe. From health and safety through sharpening, stance, tool angles, machine speeds to different wood types and uses and turning and polishing. A very full yet well paced and comfortable day. Will definitely be back for further courses and advice.
Neal Scott - - #6582
"Look what we made" That was how we greeted my wife after we returned from a most fabulous workshop with Graham. He was immensely patient and very thorough and my son and I learned a great deal about wood and how to handle this amazing substance. We produced two very lovely bowls one in tulip wood and one in maple worthy of show in our houses. Graham and his wife were wonderful hosts and we enjoyed a lovely sausage lunch which was a bonus and unexpected . Thanks so much. I shall be returning to make a pen!
Mitch and Nathan Blair - - #6176
I recently completed a one day wood turning tuition session with Graham and had a most enjoyable, interesting and informative day.
Graham has an extremely well equipped workshop and, although I have never attempted wood turning before, I was soon on a lathe turning a small spindle and finished the day having turned and finished a fairly respectable 200mm diameter tulip wood bowl. All my own work (well nearly!! Graham’s experienced guiding hand was necessary on occasion).
Coffees, lunch and afternoon tea were provided as was safety equipment and the wood blanks to work with.
I have no problem whatever recommending tuition with Graham, to anyone thinking of taking up wood turning or just finding out about what is involved, for his calm friendly manner, teaching ability and extensive knowledge of wood and wood turning.
Ed Marshall - - #6120
Really enjoyable day. Working at my own pace and with relevant safety instructions, Graham enabled me to produce a quality item to a standard I had no idea I could achieve. Great experience. Do not think about it, do it. Relaxing and superb value for money.
I am very proud of my tulip wood bowl.
More importantly the wife thinks its good as well.
Norman brown - - #6094
Yet another great lesson with Graham! His knowledge of the subject is very impressive and his tuition is incredibly thorough. I am feeling inspired for my wood turning education and look forward to more lessons with Graham.
Sacha - - #6052
In the past I have never had any confidence with woodwork, therefore I was concerned when, as a birthday present, my daughter had arranged for me to attend a one day course on wood turning at the home of Graham Turner in Sway. On arrival I was given a warm welcome by Graham and introduced to his wife. He then, in a friendly manner, set about the task of teaching me the skills of wood turning. Throughout he was most patient and gave me the confidence to produce by the end of the day a trinket bowl and a candlestick which was beyond my wildest dreams. I was thrilled to bits as is my wife who could not believe what I brought home. Three cheers for Graham!!
Graham Baxter - - #5979
What an excellent two days instruction by Graham as a present from the family. I have no experience of wood turning but do have joinery and woodworking knowledge and skills so I was very pleased that Graham accommodated that and, after an introductory bowl from softish cedar, we went on to some quite challenging things. I managed 3 complete and finished bowls and a bit of spindle practice in the two days and that is much more than I expected. The second bowl was from hard Bay wood so it was taken down very thin with waney bark edges and is certainly good enough to have on display. Chuffed to bits with that one.
Grahams way of teaching with demonstration, attentive but not in-your-face supervision worked really well and I learnt a lot in an enjoyable way. Keywords would be friendly, instructive, knowledgeable, achievements.
A really great 2 days and very successful!
I'm now thinking about a lathe and workshop of my own but that has to come after some major jobs around the house so maybe spring 2017 when I am due to retire?
Brian E - - #5859
Spent a very informative & pleasant day with Graham. Excellent teacher good hospitality, I will return in due course. Highly recommend his day course .
Brian Minns - - #5539
My husband and I spent a wonderful day with Graham learning wood turning skills. Graham is an excellent teacher, telling us all about the properties of different kinds of wood and their suitability for wood turning. We were shown how to operate the lathe and which tools to use to produce certain finishes. By the end of the day we had each made a beautiful bowl and candlestick. We enjoyed the day immensely and recommend the course to anyone looking to learn more about this interesting hobby.
Lindsey Gardner - - #5487
A very unhurried, relaxed and productive day. Graham is very experienced and is full of advice on all aspects of wood and its behaviours and suitability for turning. I left with a walnut bowl that I am really proud of, and the confidence to have a go myself. That great British staple of tea and biscuits is in ample supply throughout. Graham has since contacted me offering advice on lathes and a starter set of tools, so I feel that I am not alone in taking the pursuit further.
If you think you would like to have a go at turning you could not make a better decision than attending one of Graham's courses.
Richard Scott - - #4823
Attended a 1 day course . Graham is an excellent tutor; very patient and knowledgeable. Extremely pleased with my results. Really hoping to attend again soon
Louise Robinson-Woledge - - #4754
Me and my boyfriend decided on a wood turning experience for our Christmas present. We couldn't have picked a better choice than this.
Graham is a lovely person who is very knowledgeable of the activity, a great teacher and has an all round fun personality. The activity was really fun and makes me want to do it as a future hobby. We cannot recommend the course highly enough and will most likely return on a future date.
Rebecca Sharp - - #4623
I treated my husband to a days wood turning course with Graham and it really was fantastic. Graham was a great host who put us at ease straight away, he was able to explain the basics and then let us do the rest with guidance and support when we needed it. We had a lovely lunch (courtesy of his wife) and plenty of stops during the day. By the end of it we had made two candle sticks and a bowl each, and we're both very proud of our achievements. We both thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and loved being able to absorb yourself in a task and work with such beautiful raw materials. We would both love to return again when we get the chance. Thanks Graham!
Heather whittard-jones - - #4521
Treated my husband to a day's wood turning as a birthday gift and decided to join him. We were both lathe virgins but were shown the various techniques by the wonderful Graham! Over the course of the day, (which included a delicious lunch cooked by Chris, Graham's wife) my husband and I each made a bowl from beautiful pieces of walnut. We are thrilled with what we achieved!
Graham is absolutely lovely; an excellent tutor who instructs with endless patience and humour.
The day flew by and we learned so much about types of wood and the way they react to being worked on, the various chisels and what each one does, and all the techniques needed to shape our lovely bowls from two chunks of wood. We cannot recommend this course enough and will most definitely be back for more.
You must try this!!!
Ireen Hudson - - #4208
We spent a very enjoyable and constructive day with Graham and were total amassed that we were each able to come away with our own bowls that were turned by our own hands. This is a hobby that we will be taking up and very keen to create our own workshop. Graham is very knowable and has a way of passing on his skills to even to complete novices as ourselves.
We personally thank you and your wife for making us very welcome. We would recommend to anyone if you are thinking of taking this up as a hobby consider a days course with Graham, we are sure you will not be disappointed.
John & Barbara Barton - - #4181
I have just spent the most enjoyable day learning wood turning with Graham at his well equipped workshop in Sway, something that I had always wanted to try my hand at. Graham taught me the basics of spindle and bowl turning with patience and just the right balance between demonstrating the correct technique and letting me get onto the lathe to try my hand. Graham provided constant feedback and was quick to gently point out and correct errors in my technique and provide advice, despite my slow but steady progress. During the day Graham covered the whole process from felling and selecting timber, through seasoning, tool selection and sharpening, lathe types and turning techniques. A convivial lunch, local sausages, plenty of tea and biscuits, great. I was extremely pleased with the bowl that I turned and the progress that I was able to make under Graham's tutelage and I would thoroughly recommend Graham's courses.
Russ Coy - - #4164
Had a most enjoyable day with Graham. He was informative, patient and answered all my questions. As i do not have a lathe of my own yet I started from the position of a complete novice. Graham advised me on suitable lathes and has since answered my e.mail questions for further in formation on purchasing a lathe. I recommend this course for new lathe turners and those wishing to improve their knowledge.
Dennis Eldred - - #4081
Having spent a half day with Graham in September, I decided to have a full day this time. Graham is a natural tutor who knows how to balance instruction and discovery. During the day I turned a 10" bowl, a mushroom and a box. I had a real sense of achievement when I got home and the bowl was bagged by my step-daughter and the mushroom and box given pride of place by my partner. I'm no great shakes but, under Graham's guidance, I learned and progressed. The formula is simple - Graham is a really nice man, he is a skilled wood-turner, he is a consummate communicator, he cooks very good sausages and provides excellent value with his courses. Don't hesitate.
Rob Harvey - - #3836
We can't but recommend Graham's course wholeheartedly! Since we have first contacted him he has been researching on what we needed for our peculiar purpose: making parts of musical instruments. Graham shaped the course in order to cover the principal skills and focus thereafter on all the steps required to achieve our goal. He has been friendly and dedicated for all the course's long day, explaining everything with clarity and patience, and making it a very enjoyable experience.
We definitely left his workshop with a clearer idea of what woodturning is and with a lot of enthusiasm in starting working on our products.
Is also very important all the assistance via email, before and after the course, that he offer for any doubt you might have or advice you'd need.
Last but not least, he welcomed us with all the comforts: coffee, tea and an amazing lunch prepared by his lovely wife (highly appreciated even by two Italians!!!).
Thanks you Graham for all your help and the wonderful experience. We are looking forward to seeing you again, to complete our training and become.... Jedi masters!
Gerardo Gozzi & Gaetano Nenna - - #3664
I spent the day with Graham and what a day it was! Enjoyed every second of it! I was completely new to turning and thought it would be a good idea to get some tuition before I jumped in feet first. It was a day of great tuition and more! I came away knowing and understanding more about wood and turning than I had expected. I opted to learn how to turn pens and came away with a variety of pens, from box wood to 1970's acrylic. Graham was patient and thorough with his explanations and it was great to be left to get on with turning whilst Graham did other things around the workshop but never to far away if I had a question or needed help. This helped with the confidence as he wasn't stood watching my every move the whole time! I will be back!
Graham Burgess - - #3633
My daughter and I had two brilliant days with Graham. When he says everything is included, he really means it.
We had two days of fun and most importantly relaxation, complete with seven very presentable results to take home. Graham's relaxed teaching style is just perfect and he makes learning new skills very easy. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending a wood turning course with Graham.
Ian Clark - - #3612
I have a passion for wood and am very fortunate to have found Graham who shares that passion. I have not used a lathe since the age of 15 which is an incredible 52 years. Graham's gentle yet professional approach to teaching is the perfect way to attain excellent results. I booked a two day course and am amazed at what I achieved for a complete novice. I took some of my own wood and together with Graham's wonderful design skills were able to start projects that I shall finish on my planned return to his friendly, welcoming wood turning studio. The five gold stars that I have rated my experience with Graham is not enough, so please look at them as being encrusted with diamonds.

We spent a very enjoyable day with Graham. Very useful "refresher" course and good hospitality- he made us very welcome. Graham sharpened our tools and gave us good advice on jigs etc.
We came away with two good cedar bowls and now keen to get wood turning again after a two year gap. Graham is very helpful and approachable and has loads of very useful information. We would recommend his courses to beginners and for refreshers.
