In-person course

Willow Platter at Cowshed Creative, on our traditional Lakeland Farm, Lake District near Windermere

Willow plates - a great Christmas present for serving bread, fruit and veg.

About the Course

Learn a traditional rural craft and make your own willow platter. Perfect for serving cheese, fruit or bread. This course is for anyone who likes to use their hands, enjoys the smell and creaking of willow as they work and wants the satisfaction of creating something unique and beautiful with a practical use. The technique uses lots of shorter sticks, making it an ideal starter project for people interested in gathering hedgerow-material from garden and walks! This workshop will equip you with the skills to make an original willow platter and provide you with the confidence and ability to work on further pieces at home. Depending on individuals, there should be time to work on other simple pieces using willow. No previous experience required.

Alongside advice on how to order and soak willow and what tools to use, you will be given advice on foraging for materials in the garden or hedgerow, and how to incorporate these into your designs.

Please contact us to book via our website - 'View course organiser's website'. For info on other courses, take a look at our 'See more from this course organiser' link below.

Students need full use of both arms and hands; people with severely strained wrists or hands might struggle with the effort it takes to weave bigger withies. Please let us know before if you need the project adapting in size.

Hannah Ehlert trained for three years in a coppice worker apprenticeship with a variety of crafts people at the Bill Hogarth Memorial Trust. She has run successful creative green wood-working courses for nine years, including; hazel wattle hurdles, Swedish spoons and greenwood carving and baskets and willow structures in the garden. She also runs family and adult Nature Connection courses and works as a qualified Forest School practitioner.

Hannah’s classes are fun and sociable, whilst also providing quiet, relaxing time, allowing you to become deeply absorbed in your own project and connecting with nature´s wonders.

This workshop will be at Cowshed Creative, based in a converted Lakeland barn on our traditional family farm. The art studio is a stunning open plan space with plenty of room to wander outside and take inspiration from the amazing Lakeland landscape and environment of the peaceful Kentmere valley. Make it a special break and stay in one of our luxury camping pods on the farm. Check out our website for details.

All our tutors are carefully selected professionals and experts with extensive teaching experience. Whilst this is a relatively new venture, George, who has set up Cowshed Creative, has many years of experience programming and running creative courses at the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal and for Cumbria Adult Education.
