This course is designed for beginners and upwards and will teach you how to make a true representation of a wildlife subject using illustrative painting techniques whilst not requiring any high level of drawing skill. From source material provided, or from your own pictures, we will use the medium of gouache – an opaque watercolour that is ideal for this subject – to create wonderful lifelike pictures.
Demonstrations and individual help will be the foundation of this course which is open to all levels but will focus on the painting techniques and rendering detail with a watercolour brush rather than drawing. Please note that the work will require a precise rather than a loose style of painting.
Simon Williams is one of the country’s leading botanical artists. He is listed in the 35th Edition of Who’s who in Art. Through his business, SW Illustrations, Simon has worked for some of the largest advertisement branding agencies such as JDO Brand Design and Innovation, Tangible Advertising Agency and freelance for magazines, publishers and wildlife art agencies/studios. Simon trained in natural history illustration at the Arts Institute in Bournemouth from 1996 – 2000. A National Diploma course place was offered to Simon straight from school at 16 years old based on his portfolio without the need for any foundation courses. This lead to him being able to start a career at a very young age and after furthering his training into a Higher National Diploma he submitted work to the Society of Botanical Artists in 2000, becoming the youngest member of the SBA in 2002. He obtained a certificate of botanical merit in his very first submissions of work the previous year.
Simon has been a tutor for the DLDC since course 5 along with tutoring botanical and natural history illustration at various venues around England. In October 2013 Simon was delighted to become the new Course Director for the SBA Distance Learning Diploma Course after a year of mentoring from the former Course Director Margaret Stevens PPSBA.
From many years of illustrating Simon has developed excellent skills in Gouache, Watercolour and Acryl Gouache and Simon’s book ‘Painting in Gouache’ will be published in the spring of 2015.
