This is a one-to-one whistlestop tour of lettercarving which I tend to modify to what the student wants to achieve by attending the course.
Each student has different goals and some of you come with some experience and some with none. I like you all to bring with a word that you want to carve which is usually restricted to five letters . This is so that I can be sure you will achieve this given the time constraints.
Usually we begin with a tour of my woodcarving tools and I talk about their particular uses. The tools specific to letter carving are far fewer than the ones used for woodcarving - mainly chisels and a handful of gouges - this is then followed by a brief instruction on sharpening tools.
After this you will begin on some letter carving exercises so that you will learn how to carve the component parts of each letter. Then it is time to draw your letters and carve the word!
I am very keen that the style of letter carving you choose does not make the word look as if it has been carved by a machine - think spontaneously.
Before the course starts there is generally an exchange of emails so that I can make sure I know what you want to achieve from these two days with me and what experience you have.
***Please Note: At the moment all classes will take place outside for safe social distancing which is why I will not start teaching until May when the weather is warmer.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
Included is an oak blank on which to practice the lettering exercises and to carve your word. Use of the carving tools in the studio. I will give you, to take away, a list of tools, a list of books you might like to read and a list of suppliers. And a couple of sandwich lunches are also included - most important.
