About the Course

Artist Jason Hicklin's work embraces the painterly qualities of sugar lift aquatint and spit bite. On this short, focussed course, learn some of the ways in which these techniques can be used to great effect.

By the end of the course you will be able to
Explore painterly techniques in etching
Use sugar lift to draw marks on the etching plate
Explore aquatint techniques on sugar lift marks
Learn about and explore spit bite on aquatint
Learn how to ink and print the etching plates
Class format and activities
Students will make blocks, plates and prints and use the studio equipment needed to do this. Teaching is both in groups and on an individual, one-to-one basis, with technical and critical advice depending on your needs. The tutor will give demonstrations, presentations and lead group discussions.

In order to ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

What you need to know before you enrol
This session does not include lithography. Health & Safety information will be given at the start of the course and subsequent lessons where necessary. You may be asked to sign a form declaring that you agree to follow procedures as advised. Some chemicals used may be harmful in pregnancy. Please let the tutor know if you are pregnant and they will advise you as to necessary precautions.
Note: at present there is no wheelchair access to the print studio, and the studios are on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the building. If you have any mobility issues please contact the department prior to enrolling.

What you will need for your class
Please bring drawings, photographs or other source material to the first class to work from. A selection of paintbrushes, a notebook or sketchbook and pencil will be useful.

Any subsequent class in the Printmaking Department.
