About the Course

On this two-day course you will make a round grocery basket, a basket suitable for shopping and storing or harvesting fruit and vegetables or a small kindling basket depending on your preference.

You will learn all of the techniques required to make a round grocery basket with a handle with the prize-winning Maker Hilary Burns. This is a ‘full on’ weaving course, packing a lot in, and is aimed at those with patience and stamina (and a fair amount of agility) who would like to master the craft of willow basket making. The size and complexity that is achieved will depend on whether you are a complete beginner or have some previous experience of the craft.

Hilary Burns is a basket maker, founder of the ‘Basketry & Beyond’, and is a member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen and the New Craftsmen. Having originally trained in textiles, she initially began making baskets in London using recycled material. Moving to Devon thirty years ago, Hilary became interested in using natural and sustainable materials – namely willow – and currently grows a collection of many different varieties on the Dartington estate. Between November and March, Hilary harvests the crops, drying the rods and re-soaking for weaving as required throughout the year.

Her basketwork is based on traditional techniques used in a contemporary way, using heavy willow to give her pieces a robust, chunky and natural looking style.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
