Have you ever thought that you might like to have a go at learning how to weave? Have you thought about buying yourself a loom and seeing how you get on? Maybe you want to take the plunge but need to learn some techniques first, before you invest in expensive equipment?
We have been planning this workshop for a while now and we can offer you the opportunity to spend a full weekend of making, giving yourself time and space to learn some new skills and to have a great time along the way. You will be able to use rigid heddle looms provided by Dunja and she will take you through all of the processes needed to design and weave a simple structure into a wonderful 100% Welsh wool shawl. These processes include choosing and calculating materials, warping up your looms and of course the weaving. You will then learn the processes to finish off your shawl with fringes.
Dunja lives and works on a farm near Brecon and she would like you to sample some of her Black Mountain Welsh wool, which will be providing the weft for your shawl. You will then be able to choose from a selection of colours from the range provided by Cambrian Wool. All materials are provided in the price of your course.
We know that some of you live a distance from West Wales and because of this we have chosen the wonderful Henllys Estate to run our weekend workshop, so that you also have the opportunity to stay away for the whole weekend. There is a spacious room in a converted barn where we will set up our looms for the two days and if you wish to stay at the accommodation for the weekend you can book here with Claire who owns and runs the accommodation.
I visited Dunja on her farm back at the beginning of the year to see if we could design a course for you. I took some photos of Dunja’s beautiful work and her farm. You can read all about my meeting with Dunja and two other designer-makers on my blog here.
We are looking forward to meeting you in December. If in the meantime you have any questions please get in touch via the contact form above.
No prior weaving knowledge is required but this course is also suitable for anyone who has had a go at weaving before and wants to improve their technique. This course would be too basic for a competent weaver.
What's included in the price?
