About the Course

These classes are led by a local jeweller who has been teaching her practice across Scotland for 4 years. Alana comes from a background of textiles and ceramics and graduated with first class honors in Jewellery and metal design at Duncan Of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, before setting up her own jewellery business East Nook Studio, in St Andrews. Creating silver and mixed media jewellery, Alana offers a host of classes to keep your hands busy and your imaginations full!

Come along and learn how to saw, solder, form and texture your own silver jewellery from scratch! Use both traditional and modern techniques to create your own designs or recreate from the examples.

INTRODUCTION TO JEWELLERY MAKING
This is a class for beginners, to introduce you to the art of making jewellery. We will begin by learning to cut and shape your metal, applying textures with a variety of tools and rolling techniques. We will practice soldering with a small blow torch to bond two pieces of metal together, before looking at the process of ‘cleaning up’ your samples to give them a polished finish and discussing how they could be turned into a finished design.
Throughout the block you will make a finished silver ring, earrings & pendant before going on to create freely, utilising the techniques that you have learned and furthering your skills. You will also create a variety of samples, which you may decide to make into further jewellery creations. Bring a small notebook with you to note down ideas, draw sketches of designs and to jot down handy hints and tips on methods or useful websites. Reference books and a small image library are at hand to skim through for further inspiration.
