About the Course

Quality and Excellence in Teaching is at the heart of our training. We are a multi awards winning training centre and recognised by Ofsted as deliverying good practice in upholstery and soft furnishings. In March 2014 we received the Marsh Heritage Crafts Trainers Awards; May 2013 we received the Craft Skills Awards for encouraging craft skills. In July 2012 all our tutors were awarded Certificates of Excellence by the Worshipful Company of Upholders and in November 2011 we were awarded Outstanding Training Provider of the Year at the 2011 Proskills Awards sponsored by the Scottish Government. Proskills are the Sector Skills Council for the Furniture and Furnishings Industries. So you can be sure that the training you receive at Wendy Shorter Interiors is the best.

Working alongside other students you will start your practical work on exercise frames that have been devised to consolidate your learning and to give you a clear understanding of the different processes involved without incurring unnecessary costs: drop-in seat, stitched and stuffed, sprung arm, deep buttoning, box cushion, an independent sprung edge. You will be given sound information on the tools and materials used, the legal requirements of the UK Fire Regulations, fabrics and their compositions and usage, furniture stuffing heights and profiles. Once you start working on your individual assessment projects you will benefit from learning by osmosis working alongside others that may be working on different styles of chairs. The research projects will give you a better understanding of the styles, periods and designers of the types of furniture and fabrics that you may be faced with in the future.

This is a three stage programme designed to develop to give a greater range of practical skills allowing you to work on antique as well as mid-century modern furniture, from a simple drop-in dining chair seat to large traditionally upholstered armchairs, as well as developing a greater range of tailoring skills required for mid-century furniture.

A high proportion of our students achieve credits and distinctions for their work and many of our past students are now working for themselves or for other upholsterers including royal warrant holders, interior designers and members of the AMUSF.

This course may lead to a qualification accredited by the Association of Master Upholsterers & Soft Furnishers (AMUSF).
