The quilts of Gees Bend break many of the accepted rules of patchwork and this class will encourage you to do the same.
Day one - You will design and stitch a patchwork panel, approximately 45cms square, inspired by the lively, often asymmetric patterns found in the Gees Bend quilts. Starting with a simple motif panel and building outwards to create a unique design, mixing fabrics in exciting combinations and designs and all held together using the simplest of either machine or hand stitching (running or back stitch). The panel will then be made into a tote bag or cushion.
Day two - Having seen the creative possibilities with this free wheeling approach to patchwork you can start a second project of your choice. This could be the beginnings of a quilt, a throw, place mats, table runner or something else.
This is a thoroughly liberating, fun way to work and is suitable for all abilities.
Please bring -
Basic sewing kit
Fabric scissors or rotary cutter, and quilting ruler. (Available on Ebay or Amazon).
A stash of fabrics – non-stretchy cotton and a good mix of patterns e.g. large-scale pattern, small scale pattern, stripes, checks, dots, formal and informal patterns. Ideally try and bring fabrics suitable for recycling eg shirts, blouses, furnishing fabrics (not too thick!)
