About the Course
In this two day workshop, you will learn how to design images for lino printing, experiment with mark making and complete a two colour reduction linocut print.
Day One is spent exploring the basics of lino printing. By the end of the session you will have used a range of lino cutting tools and have an understanding of how to use marks and line in printing. You will print your designs using the relief printing presses as well as hand burnishing, so that you can continue to print at home.
On day two we move on to develop your understanding of the reduction technique. We start with a small introductory activity to help you get to grips with the process and then we move on to design, cut and print a two colour lino print. We will be working with soft cut lino, which is easy to carve your design and will allow you to make an expressive print.
You will leave with… prints of your mark and line making designs, five two-colour prints of your reduction design and your lino plates. If you select ‘with lino toolkit’ you will also take home your own five blade, wooden handled lino cutting tool kit. This comes with a block of lino, a small brayer and tube of ink, so that you can continue printing at home.
Who is this workshop for? Complete beginners to printmaking and lino cutting, or those with a little knowledge who would like to increase their skills. Those with more experience will be able to cut a more complex design. We cover all the basics and so no prior experience in lino is necessary.
Materials and equipment: All printmaking, tools, material and equipment will be provided. Please bring along a sketchbook with some loose ideas to work from – although we will spend time in each session developing the designs.
Important Details: Group size is limited to 6 people, to give you plenty of space to work in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. There will be opportunities to ask questions throughout the session. Please arrive at 09:30 for a cup of tea or coffee. The workshop will finish each day at approximately 15:00, but please note that times may vary depending on the speed at which you work. The simpler your design, the quicker you will finish. Teas and coffees are provided throughout the day, but please bring along a packed lunch (the nearest shop is a five minute drive away). Slamseys is a working farm in Essex and courses take place in the beautiful Barley Barn.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

I was a complete beginner to working with lino but this was thoroughly informative - I'm pleased & will book again. Thanks to Anne for the biscuits!

I've always wanted to learn lino and came on this class in September. It's a great introduction to the process, taught in a small class in a large space, so plenty of room for working. I enjoyed using the presses, but am glad that this is an easy one to do my Christmas cards in at home this month!

I learnt a lot on this valuable course. All of the steps to complete a reduction lino plate and print it in two colours. I chose something quite ambitious, but managed to fit it in, just in time. Great teaching & fab space x

Gorgeous space. Ruth is great fun and knowledgeable, but also friendly and approachable. This one is a little different than some of the other classes, but still enjoyable and a good foundation for future classes. Friday mornings work for me, so I hope to make a term of it. Recipe for the flapjacks please!

What a beautiful day! Lovely surroundings, pleasant people - just the thing I needed to kick start my projects. I've got a sketchbook full of ideas, colour and drawings and lots of ideas I'm going to rework at home. I will be booking onto the fabric printing next month to make some of these ideas come true!

I go on courses when other people go on holiday and as it happened 2 booked courses had been cancelled. It was at this stage I discovered Slamseys printing courses and had a rush of blood to the head, booking 4 courses in the Autumn 2017 programme. I started to panic: What if I didn’t the first one and had paid the fees for 3 more? Would the content overlap too much that I wouldn’t learn much and get bored? What is I didn’t like the tutor?
It has been a total success! These courses are equal in standard to the mosaic courses run the artist Anne Schwegmann-Fielding, another professional artist, and previously the best I have attended.
Ruth Wheaton is a very experience tutor class and gently moves students on so that the all the activities are completed and yet there is flexibility. The equipment and block printing ink are freely available when you need them and there are lots of helpful tips along the way so that you can continue at home. She has a real love and understanding of the print-making process.
The description on the website is full and very accurate and if you explore the super website you will see the standard of work which is possible achievable to.
Each course covered a different area. To me learning how to build up a design and use the colour wheel to make all the colours needed from red, blue and yellow ink has been really useful. I believe I have a acquired very thorough grounding and with practice at home, and likely achieve very satisfying results.
The details list the kind of people who will enjoy the courses. I would say that with Ruth’s very gentle teaching style, providing you consider yourself ‘crafty’ you will get a great deal out of them. You need no more knowledge than having done potato printing and having enjoyed the process. You will meet a whole variety of people. I call myself a mosaic artist, but not having done any printing in a degree module for nearly 20 years because of a depressive illness resulting in complete loss of confidence.
Everything associated with Slamsey’s is of the highest quality and matches the branding of the website. The barn is a very large airy space and very conducive to encouraging art activities. There being no more than 6 in a class there is no need for the diffident to feeling overwhelmed. …. and there is plenty of parking!
What more can I say? Only I am already planning to join more course in the future. My money was well spent!

Wonderful venue, tasty refreshments, great facilities. I really enjoyed learning to screen print, have been wanting to learn for a long time. I'm excited to buy my own supplies & keep printing at home - thank you!

Printed a tote bag for Christmas, fun workshop & really pleased with my design. Yummy rocky road cake too!

I came with three friends to this course, Slamseys is in a beautiful location on a farm, the barn is a really enjoyable place to be. Ruth was friendly and helpful throughout the session - no question was too silly to ask! Really pleased with my bags, can't wait to come again soon!

I took my wife of 26 years to this - it was a wonderful day that brought us closer together. My printing experience had been limited to the office photocopier to date so this course really opened my eyes to the versatilities of the form. The venue and facilities were excellent and I really enjoyed the cheese sandwiches. Tutor Ruth was very approachable and had a great sense of humour. Would recommend.

Did one of these courses over the summer and it was totes amazing.
Ruth was on hand through the whole thing to help me with the design and any questions I had about the process. At end of the course I had a great gift for my friend's birthday.
Really fun too.

Really enjoyed the printmaking workshop at Slamseys, fabulous venue, delicious refresments and helpful and warm tutor. The small group size meant there was lots of help at hand throughout the workshop.
