Learn collagraphy live online in this one to one workshop with Genevieve Lavers.
This is an opportunity for you to try out collagraph printmaking from the comfort of your home. We will plan two online sessions: one for the plate building (2 hours) and one for the inking (also 2 hours). We will agree mutually convenient dates and times for the second session between us.
Collagraphy is a type of printmaking that uses a variety of textural elements glued onto a base plate. It is fun and safe, and requires no prior artistic skill - just the ability to glue things down, and some imagination! If you are artistic though, then there is plenty of scope to run wild with your ideas.
This taster course is designed for a complete beginner, and you will work alongside me as I demonstrate some basic skills to get you started with this very experimental form of printmaking. I will send you a pack containing materials to use in constructing and inking your collagraph plates, and I will also provide a list of additional things you will need to provide yourself. The aim is to keep your financial outlay to a minimum, until you're sure you want to take this printmaking technique further, so I will do my best to keep the shopping list very short.
As you are unlikely to have access to an intaglio press, we will build collagraph plates with this in mind; good results can be achieved with an old-fashioned rolling pin and inking "in relief" with a roller. Time permitting, I will demonstrate the intaglio inking technique for you, so you can understand what it means, and just in case you were planning to invest in an intaglio press at some stage.
By the end of the first session you will have made two collagraph plates: the first will be abstract and textural, the second may relate to a seasonal theme and will be more representational. However, as this is a one-to-one course, we can select themes that resonate with you personally. By the end of the second session you will have produced a few hand-inked collagraph prints from both of the plates you made in session one.
This taster should give you the basics! It should help you decide whether you want to pursue collagraphy further; by providing most of the materials you need, you can watch how I do it and learn alongside me.
Having attended my online taster course, you might be intrigued enough to consider learning more, and you are very welcome to come to my home studio in Dorset for a special two-day bespoke collagraphy workshop, where you can use my intaglio press and develop your skills further. Details for this in-person masterclass are given separately in my course listings.
Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 2 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.
4 hours of online tuition and demonstration, split between two separate sessions (usually one week apart) lasting 2 hours each.
A pack containing:
- Some blank plates and a selection of textural materials posted to you.
- Sundries needed for inking your plates in session 2.
- Fabriano paper squares (220 gsm) to print onto in session 2.
Demonstrations to show techniques in plate construction and inking and working alongside me to build your own collage plates.
PVA glue, scissors, pencil. More details will be given after booking, but most items will be things you are likely to have anyway.
A tube of ink is likely to be around £10. I may demonstrate inking with 2 colours, but monochrome collagraphs look stunning - so for this taster you can definitely get great results with just one colour. Information on inks and where to buy them will be sent to you once you have booked.
You also need a roller. I will send links for places to buy them, but these aren't generally too expensive.

Genny was a delight to work with and I thoroughly enjoyed our two taster sessions together. It's amazing what can be achieved with glue, torn paper, pieces of string and a toothpaste packet! Great fun.
Response from gennytheprintmaker:I enjoyed it too Sue, and many thanks for leaving such a warm review. Hope to meet for an in-person session in the future perhaps! Genny
I had a great time on this collagraphy print course. Lots of creative fun making the images and printing them. Genny provided lots of information about the development of this approach as well as history of intaglio printing. She was supportive, encouraging, creative and responsive to the moment. I loved every moment. This is something I will keep doing as relaxing and calming. Thank you Genny.
Response from gennytheprintmaker:And thank YOU for being such an enthusistic participant. You were great fun to spend online creative time with; you and collagraphy will become firm friends I think. Keep in touch, Genny.
The collagraphy online workshop with Genevieve was absolutely brilliant - enjoyed ever minute. Genny is very knowledgable and a patient teacher. I was so pleased with what I was able to achieve in just two sessions. I highly recommend CraftCourses and Look forward to booking another later in the year.
Response from gennytheprintmaker:Many thanks for that lovely feedback Andy! Your enthusiasm and interest throughout made it easy for me to teach those two online sessions. I shall look forward to catching up in a future workshop, and seeing your collagraphy experiments! Best wishes, Genny
