About the Course
A very popular course as an introduction or a refresher – a chance to learn this fascinating technique and discover how to make beautiful original prints from everyday materials.
To ensure everyone has support and good access to the printing presses, numbers are limited to 4 students per course, teaching is tailored to the needs of individual students and everyone is encouraged to share ideas and learn from each other in a friendly group.
The approach is experimental, there really is no such thing as a mistake and it is great to observe the excitement of discovery as students get the hang of collagraph printmaking and explore the possibilities it holds.
The first day is spent making plates, using card, cement, glue, grit and various found materials. The course covers basic plate making techniques such as masking, layering, cutting into the surface, and the always popular dribbly glue.
You will understand how to create texture and line as well as tones from very dark to very light in your plates using a combination of everyday materials like sticky tape, sand paper.
On the second day we print; combining colours, intaglio and relief techniques, chine collee, masking and overprinting, and possibly a bit of viscosity…..
Suitable for beginners or those with some experience of printmaking.
Course dates for groups of 3 or 4 people can be arranged between April and October
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?

Each student leaves with a mini portfolio of about 10 - 15 original prints and several printing plates which can be developed int further work.
Emily prepares well for her students. She asks beforehand if there is a particular area that students would like to work on. Generous supplies of materials are available. Emily is patient! She gives advice and encouragement gently and explains the processes along the way. Enjoyment, experimenting and fun are encouraged. One day is good but two days even better! Thank you Emily

I highly recommend this course! Emily's approach is relaxed and combines just the right amount of information and guidance whilst letting us go with out own flow. We were contacted before the course to discuss the themes we were interested in, so the course was really tailored to us.
It was a luxury to have 2 days immersed in printing in such a lovely environment - Emily's workshop space and the garden were very conducive to creativity.
I was delighted with what I had achieved and came away with a stack of colourful prints and a desire to do more!!
Emily really is an excellent tutor!

I had so much fun and learned so much I'd recommend this course to anyone wanting to learn the basics of collograph printing
Emily was very organised and her spacious studio well set out to provide an excellent working space
She was generous with her time and information and not at all precious about her materials or tools and very informative about her methods and techniques
It was exciting to see the results that could be achieved with simple materials
I came away with a stack of plates, prints, ideas and information as well as a desire to do more

This is as an excellent introduction to collograph, ideal for beginners. As I had not used this technique before I learnt a lot and enjoyed experimenting, producing a variety of outcomes. Emily is very well organised and her studio set up to make it easy for a number of different users.
There is also opportunity to pick Emily's brains about materials and suppliers which was helpful.
