If you ever fancied making your own books from scratch but are worried about getting started, then this is a nice easy introduction. Janina will demonstrate three different but simple book structures. There will be plenty of time to make at least one of each of these books, and to start to explore some variations of the basic structures.
The three books are all easy to make and need a minimal amount of equipment, so you can make more at home after the workshop. Once you’ve mastered the basics each of these styles of books they can be taken in many different directions, using a variety of materials and by changing the sizes, shapes and stitch patterns.
The three books are:
Flower book. The inside pages are based on an origami fold and, once glued together, the pages open out like a flower. This book will have stiff card covers, which we will cover with decorative paper. The first demonstration piece will be 11cm square
Pamphlet stitch booklets with a ‘flip flop’ card cover. Pamphlet stitch is probably the easiest of the bookbinding stitches and Janina will show you all the steps involved. She will also show you how to make a card ‘flip flop’ cover which is an intriguing structure that opens in two directions. The first book will be 21cm high and 7.5cm wide and will house 2 pamphlet stitch booklets.
Japanese stab stitch. This is a traditional style of book with a soft card cover and attractive stitching along one side of the book. The first demonstration piece will be A6 landscape and with a simple stitch pattern. Janina will also show how to stitch more complex patterns.
