About the Course

This course is designed for those looking to paint the landscape in oils. Landscape artist Clare Rose will inspire you to connect with the raw and immediate experience of drawing and painting in the landscape, enabling informed, ‘felt’ landscape oil paintings in the studio.

Over the three days Clare will guide you through the differing approaches to landscape painting, from traditional methods, contemporary practices and towards abstraction. Part of the course consists of drawing in the environment, in the grounds and gardens of Claydon Estate, using sketchbooks and photography effectively to record findings and explore composition and tone (entry into the gardens is included in your course fee). Back in the studio, these findings are used to create expressive work, exploring ideas and developing an individual language. Drawing and use of oil colour is central to the course, as is learning to work with a variety of surfaces, expressive application of paint, and responsive mark making.

Drawing directly from your sketches and photographs of the Claydon Estate grounds and parkland landscape, you will translate this information into ‘worked up’ paintings back in the studio. Clare will encourage you to develop work across several paintings at the same time to encourage a relaxed momentum, enjoying the process of manipulating oil paints, embracing happy accidents and progressing from a starting point while still referring to composition, tonal and colour guides. Starting with a limited colour palette, beginners will learn how to mix and balance colour and tone, while more experienced students can find an easier harmony and luminescence in their work. Throughout the course, you will explore colour, texture, tone and the essentials of landscape selection and composition to develop your imagination and experimentation.

This course will give you plenty of one-to-one instruction from Clare as well as informal group critiques and discussions helping further your knowledge and enjoyment of landscape painting in oils.

It is suitable for all levels of experience and beginners are most welcome.

Students will feel encouraged to experiment and fully engage with their painting process while worrying less about the end ‘product’. Students will leave with a greater understanding about the use of oil paint. During this course you can expect to complete at least 2 ‘worked up’ or finished paintings and a sketchbook well stocked with drawings, technical notes and inspiration.
