About the Course
This course is for writers and performers.
It takes a subjective look at the development of hip hop and rap as an artistic expression, and the hybrid manipulation of language that rap artists use in their work.
Established and highly influential figures in the music industry such as Nas, Kendrick Lamar, Rakim, DJ Premier, J Dilla, Alchemist, Kanye West and Clams Casino will be studied, which will aid your creative and entrepreneurial development.
On this course you will:
improve your writing skills in relation to structure, form and emotional content
gain confidence in your own material
explore the historical and political context of hip hop and rap, from inception to today
undertake practical workshops to help you gain insight and critical feedback of your work.
You’ll use case studies to better understand the art of sampling, how to harness the creative formula, how to cultivate a career in hip hop and how to be an entrepreneur in the industry.
The course involves written project work, discussions and group interaction.
There’s a focus on equality and cultural diversity in the artists chosen to study, and documentary footage and music containing important information about the artists will be included.
Easily available online links for research prior to and after the sessions will also be made available to you.
