Sustainable sculpture at the Mary Ward Centre

About the Course

This mixed media sculpture course explores the use of environmentally friendly concepts; reaching from responsible sourcing, the inherent beauty of natural materials to re-using suitable found materials.

Who is this course for
This new mixed media sculpture course explores ways to make art using techniques and materials that are sustainable and eco-friendly.

We will not just use junk in interesting ways but are also looking for methods of producing sculpture including ethical responsible sourcing for both natural as well as recyclable materials.

This course is accessible to all people regardless of age or level of experience.

What does this course cover
Topics throughout the course will include: traditional and modern sculpture processes and practice using mixed media. We experiment with materials and techniques that have a minimal impact on the environment and are as much as possible sustainable; techniques can include construction, carving, maquette- making, simple mould making and casting.

We will explore the work of artists known for their awareness of sculpture in relation to their environment.

We will source natural and sustainable materials such as Wood, Soft limestone and Clay.

We will recycle materials such Clay, papier-mâché' and scrap.

By the end you will have:

An ability to develop ideas from first entries in your sketchbook through to planning and making.

Developed a range of useful techniques suitable for sculpture

An ability to make small finished pieces of sculpture that could be described as environmentally sensitive and aware.

An awareness of the work of artists working in related ways.

What will it be like
Each student will be encouraged to use a sketchbook/ notebook to keep a record of work in progress both as a source of imagination, to develop and record ideas and as an aid to self-assess your work.

We recommend you take photographs of your work throughout its developing stages including the finished work. A digital camera is available.

An introductory project can be suggested by the tutor, leading towards individual idea development and students work.

In a class of mixed abilities and projects, the tuition is more often than not one to one and consequently students will be expected to be self- reliant and patient until such time as their needs can be attended to. Students will be encouraged to analyse and evaluate their own work; to help and advise each other. This may take the form of a friendly discussion with the tutor and fellow students.

What else do you need to buy or do
Students are advised to purchase a sketchbook or sketchpad, A5 or A4 as recommended size. You are welcome to ask your tutor.

Regular daily sketchbook work will greatly improve any students aptitude and will be highly recommended.

Explore the use of found objects.

You may wish to bring in source materials from nature or responsibly forage for scrap. Wood, the most readily available and greenest of all materials, can be found in Parks and Wood land, Skips, or drift wood from the beach.

Space is limited, so works can't be large and there is a 7kg weight restriction.
