A beginner's workshop learning the basic techniques of ribbon embroidery, with an introduction to the history and culture of the time through a presentation, background music and a taste of historic recipes. In this workshop you will create a beautiful bunch of spring daffodils using some of the basic techniques of ribbon embroidery. Working with hand painted silk ribbons, I will teach you how to create a three-dimensional display piece.
There will also be an introduction to the history and culture of silk ribbon embroidery, which became popular during the 1700s and focused primarily on nature. This workshop is suitable for beginners with some experience and knowledge of hand embroidery.
Tutor Information
Rebecca has always been fascinated by the intricate details in life, particularly in art, historic costumes and textiles.
After studying (ND) Textiles and (BA Hons) Costume Interpretation, she realised that, although she loved learning the history behind period costumes and textile techniques, her favourite part of creating the costumes was the surface embellishment: primarily lacemaking, embroidery and beading.
After teaching in London for several years, she returned to Somerset to pursue what she is most passionate about - classes combining textile techniques with the history and culture behind them.
Rebecca hopes to help keep these alive for the next generation.
