About the Course
Practical straw bale building course in the South West.
A two-day course of theory and building work learning the basic techniques of practical building with straw bales. During the two days the following topics will be covered and put into practice constructing a demonstation building dedicated to training:
- History of bale building
- Advantages and disadvantages of straw bales as a building material
- Local authority Planning and Building Control implications
- Environmental impact
- Current straw bale building practice and recent innovations
- Planning your project
- Finishing options
There are a maximum of 12 places on the course with DCRS director and tutor Rob Buckley. Rob has been building sustainable new builds and renovating older properties for 25 years with his building companies BBI and DCRS Construction Ltd and pioneered straw bale building techniques over the past 10 years
As this is a small class, any particular aspect of building with straw bales or personal projects can be discussed during the course.
Dorset Centre for Rural Skills (DCRS) was established in 2003 as a not-for-profit, training enterprise with the aim of 'keeping rural skills alive'. It achieved the Social Enterprise Mark in 2009 and was one of the first organisations in Dorset to do so.

What's included in the price?
Straw Bale Building course price of £225 includes two day quality tuition, free camping and lunches, plus breakfast on the second day. If you prefer, we can provide details of a good local B&B.
Course held in open, so dress for the weather conditions although you are protected from rain and should stay dry!
