About the Course

This course can be done online or one to one at my workshop. Tools provided at my workshop or I can advise you where to buy your own.

Sessions can be booked in 4 and 8 hour blocks but can then be broken down into bite sized two hour sessions. This helps with dealing with specific issues, time to practice and a revisit in the next session before progressing. Whilst you can have whichever suits you best, this structure has proved the most successful so far.

Everyone who attends learns how to straighten a stick, make a "proper" traditional peg joint to fix the handle to the shank and use simple tools to work the handle and shank to a finished stage. No power tools are used by students - all sawing and drilling is done before the class. There is a choice of different handle types in wood and antler to use.

All materials and tools are provided on the day.

Cost per person is £150.00 for the full day 10am to 4pm. Class limited to 2 people. Classes are run all year round, preferably on a Sunday but midweek can be arranged. Please contact Stuart for venues and dates either by email or mobile. No places will be booked without payment being made on the day of booking.

This course is for people aged 18 and over (due to insurance requirements).

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

What's included in the price?

All tools and materials are supplied and all refreshments are included. All handles are pre-cut and drilled so there will be no use of power tools on this basic course.

Had a really enjoyable day with Stuart. He is clearly very knowledgeable and also very patient. Easy and relaxed teaching method, breaking things down into easy to understand stages and delivered with a good sense of humour too.

Thanks for all the cups of tea.

Go on. Give it a go!!

We chose this course to give my dad more than just a plain gift but a new experience (as well as a handsome walking stick!) for his 70th birthday, the aim being my brother and I would join him too.
Stuart delivers the course with just the right blend of teaching, wisdom and wit that we found ourselves laughing a lot of the time (not to mention filing a fair amount too!).

The stick I made is truly mine, down to the skills and techniques I was shown and very happy I am with it too (as my brother and dad are with theirs). I know they are also planning the next sticks that they will make so that teaching must have stuck!

Thanks to Stuart for a great day. Highly recommended.

Friendly, informative approach. Easy going and at one's own pace. I came away with my own stick which I was well impressed with. Recommended.

Expertly taught and really enjoyable. The stick appears over the day and very pleased to go home with the finished article. Recommended.

Stuart,

I am STILL waiting for you to supply the 2 honeysuckle twist walking shanks that I paid for at the course you ran in Cumbria.

I trust that I shall receive them by courier within the week. Otherwise I will be forced to leave the appropriate feedback on this site.

Had no knowledge at all so decided to jump in at the deep end but I need not have worried. Stuart is keen to put you at ease and has a great knowledge base. Learning as I went along and wow! A stick to take home at the end of the day which my wife and kids love. Did not know there was so much to stickmaking and how long it takes. A+++.

One to one tuition with Stuart taught me a lot that I did not know. Having a basic knowledge of woodworking helped and gave me the confidence to specialise with a stick. Patience and lots of knowledge to share, an excellent tutor who makes you feel at ease straightaway. Would recommend to anyone.

I knew very little about stickmaking having only previously done a bit of woodwork at school - so a complete novice. Stuart is humerous, very responsive and very patient - needed in my case! He does not bombard you with a lot of info but takes you through the process step by step always willing to answer any questions and redirect you if you go wrong. First class, highly recommended whatever your skill level. Most enjoyable and rewarding to go home with a finished stick. Brilliant.

This course was really rewarding, I was a complete novice to start with but by the end of the day I had surpassed my expectations. The stick i made is sturdy as anything - going to test it out on the weekend on a hike!! Overall very impressed.
