Intro to Spoon Carving.

Spoon carving is a fantastic introduction into green woodwork and one that can provide a lifetimes enjoyment. It is a fantastic skill to learn as it can be done anywhere, with few tools and very little space. On this course we will learn to carve a selection of wooden utensils that you can use in your home using three tools, an axe, a carving knife and a spoon knife.

I will show you how to use all the tools safely and effectively, showing you how to split your log, safely carving with your axe and you will be shown a whole host of knife grips that will give you the skills to carry carving at home. We will start off by carving some quicker projects such as knives and chopsticks to practice your skills and then move onto spoons at the end of the first day. We will talk about various spoon designs and what sort of shapes and sizes are the best for various types of spoons, such as eating spoons and cooking spoons.

As well as carving I will show you how to sharpen and look after your tools and although all tools and wood are provided, you are welcome to bring your own if you have them.

Warning, spoon carving is addictive, once you start you will not be able to stop!!

The course is run in a friendly and relaxed environment in Sheffield by Nadine Grundy, who has a wealth of teaching experience and is a green woodwork practitioner.

Can’t recommend this course highly enough to anyone wanting to learn how to spoon carve ! Nadine is a great tutor, presenting each stage in clear and understandable steps, and helping build confidence in using the tools involved, from axe technique to the different craft and spoon knife holds. There was an inspiring range of beautifully carved spoons on show to look at and handle, mostly Nadine’s own, loads to get enthused about and time just flew by. After previously spending countless hours alone scraping away at pieces of wood I have at last learned to do it properly! Bretton Hall, with stunning views across the Peak district, was also a great venue for the course.

Thoroughly enjoyed my spoon carving course. Very informative and I was glad to be taught the full range of skills needed to carry on with my wood carving. (I am now addicted as warned) A very relaxed atmosphere and Nadine was very patient and taught us all at our own pace. I would definitely recommend this course to people with an interest in learning wood carving or even just for an enjoyable weekend in the outdoors.
