There is something very satisfying about carving a spoon. Using fresh green wood and some basic tools you can very soon immerse yourself in this traditional craft.
This full day session is aimed at those who want to go into more detail. Over the course of the day we’ll work from a freshly split log to carve a spatula and a spoon. I’ll guide you through the safe use of the tools needed. Initially working with an axe to rough out the forms we then use a straight knife to refine the shape and the hook knife to form the bowl.
We’ll also cover wood choice, sharpening and oils and finishes. I’m also happy to talk about decorating techniques and guide you through some of the resources and tools available.
Carving in my garden workshop I aim to provide a relaxed environment for you to learn. With spaces limited to 2 people I enjoy teaching one to one or in a small informal group.
I run sessions most weeks from Wednesday through to Fridays (occasional Saturdays are available) starting at 1pm.
Whilst the session is primarily aimed at adult beginners I can also teach those with some basic knowledge who are looking to advance their techniques in more detail.
