About the Course
Join bladesmith Matt Aldridge at his forge in Lincolnshire for a range of two day workshops where you will learn how to make a knife or axe from start to finish.
We are offering two places for £500, instead of £600, saving £50 per person for workshops booked between now and the end of June. This offer covers all workshops booked for the rest of the year as long as the deposit is paid before the end of June.
Our workshops book up quickly so please book early. See our website for remaining availability of places.
The sessions include forging a billet of steel to shape, using a belt grinder to remove excess metal, heat treating your knife, and how to fit and finish a solid handle.
Axe workshops use a lot more forging, as you will be hot punching and then using a drift to shape a handle aperture, before forge welding in a billet of tool steel, forging out the shape by hand, then polishing and heat treating the axe before fitting an axe handle.
Each student will aim to go home with one completed knife or axe.
Please note that axe making is very hot work so do bear this in mind if booking an axe workshop for mid summer.
We currently offer the following types of two day workshop:
A - Seax
B - Chef knife
C - Bushcraft knife
D - Bowie knife
E - Axe making
Please mention which item you'd like to make when you get in touch to book your place.
Currently axe or knife workshops can be run on any of the dates shown, so all you need to do is pick a date and get in touch to confirm it. We have a range of dates and subjects booked throughout the year for these courses and you will be invited to choose from seax, chef, bowie or bushcraft blade for your project. Please see our website for details of which course runs on which date and the availability of places.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
Sessions include all materials to make your knife or axe, as well as lunch, tea and coffee through the day. Lunch usually consists of toasted sandwiches of some sort, plus home made cake, but if you have any particular dietary requirements do get in touch as we can be flexible!
There is room for two people on each course, so why not bring a friend or loved one?
We are able to run these sessions on alternate dates to those shown so if we are fully booked for a particular month or you would like a session run mid week, please do contact us to see if we can arrange alternative dates for you. All weekend dates available for 2019 have now been added.
All other dates are available for booking the workshop of your choice, however.
Workshops run from 9am til 5pm each day, and it is a good idea to wear clothes you don't mind getting scruffy in, as well as footwear you are happy to stand up for long periods of time in. Please advise us when booking if you have any health problems that may cause you difficulty when forging - we will do our best to make sure that you remain comfortable throughout the duration of the course, or, if necessary, will be able to advise you on whether or not you will be safe to do the course.
Workshops are covered with public liability insurance, and we are happy to teach age 16 upwards, though between 16 and 18 year old students will need to have a parent in attendance, also doing the course.
A fantastic weekend! Working with Matt in the forge to craft my own Viking axe over 2 days (handle and all!) was a truly satisfying experience. Matt is a great teacher, able to convey his knowledge and keep you on course throughout the process. Ali made me feel very welcome and kept us fuelled for the gruelling days! Heartily recommended and will definitely return.

I was made to feel right at home friendly welcoming and informative course. Nothing was to much trouble. If you have even the slightest interest in making your own knife from scratch you will love it. Matt and Ally are truely great hosts, i intend to go back to forge my second blade

This workshop was a pleasure from start to finish - even the wind and rain didn't dampen my enjoyment. Matt was knowledgeable and a great teacher, offering encouragement and advice in equal measure, and Ali a wonderful host. Came away with a Bowie knife that surpassed my expectations, given it was my first attempt at forging, can't wait to go camping and try it out!
Anyone considering this course will not be disappointed - thanks Matt and Ali for a great couple of days!

What a fantastic two days this was. Matt and Ali are lovely people and made me feel very welcome and looked after. Matt is a patient, knowledgeable and thoroughly kind chap who put up with my endless barrage of questions with much good humour. Ali looked after both of us with a regular supply of refreshment and I personally appreciated her encouraging comments on my progress.
The connection I felt to my knife during the forging is unique in my experience. To see something as unyielding as a piece of grey steel transform through your own effort and imagination into a beautiful object is wonderful . As I made a kitchen knife I will hopefully have many interactions with it over the years to come.
Hopefully I will have a chance to come back and try my hand at something else.

I loved forging a Seax! I’m a female on the wrong side of 55 and under 5ft but that was no obstacle as Matt is a great tutor. He is calm, patient and knowledgeable and obviously loves what he does.
Ali was very attentive, even finding a B&B for me and picking me up from the station! She really went above and beyond in her hospitality!
It was lots of fun and if you are a fellow devotee of Forged in fire - you will LOVE it!!!

I bought my partner the Seax forging weekend as a present as he loves Forged in Fire and he's been super busy this year so deserved a treat. From the start, Ali was fab at keeping in touch, asking about dietary requirements and even what cakes my hubby liked! He had the most amazing time on the course, absolutely full of it both days, and so proud to show off his frankly pretty impressive knife! He loved that Matt encouraged but allowed creative expression and encouraged both participants in the class to style their knives in a way they personally liked. He came home both days well fed and even with a slice of homemade apple cake for me (upvote right there!) He is dying to return to do another class. So I highly recommend it for anyone interested in forging. It sounded like the personal attention was ideal and a lot of fun was had!

Thoroughly enjoyable weekend just had bashing shaping and grinding metal. Matt and Ali were very welcoming into their home, thank you so much!
Matt was a very enthusiastic and patient teacher and a fellow Skyrim fan! Ali provided some much needed and freshly baked bread and cake after some hard graft. Can't recommend it enough, loved it!

My Dad and I had an amazing weekend which allowed us to fulfil our Forged in Fire dream. Ali and Matt were amazing hosts very knowledgeable and easy to talk to throughout the course. The lengths which Matt was willing to go to to insure we were happy was amazing and he allowed us to create the knives in our own styles which was shown in the difference between our blades. Looking forwards to forging our axes!!!

Response from Eldrum and Redwolf:Thank you for your review! We thoroughly enjoyed hosting you and your brother for the workshop last weekend, and you are welcome back any time!
Forged In Lincolnshire!
After watching a fair few 'forged in fire'episodes we started to get a little intrgued about making our own! Booked a 2 day course to make a seax with Matt at his forge for a Birthday Gift and what an experience! Matts friendly, calm, down to earth and clearly loves passing on his knowledge whilst also letting you make your own decisions on how you want your knife to look! Ali's hospitality can't be faulted, going the extra mile to make sure youre kept fed and watered! We had seen other courses described as classes and group sessions but this is just 2 of you with Matt and Ali at there home hammering, grinding and sweating in the forge, meaning you get Matts full attention and not sharing it with a group of strangers!
Beware, you will get hot, you will get tired, youll get covered in sawdust as you create your piece, but after two days of fun you will get something you can call your own and be proud of!
Located in a beautiful rural setting, cannot recommend enough!
