About the Course
Learn how to work with silver clay to create unique silver rings as well as other 3D forms including beads or lockets. Ideally students will have some experience although beginners are also welcome.
Who is this course for
Making rings from silver clay can be tricky and frustrating due to the fragile nature of a ring form in this material, so this course is best for students who have done more than just a beginners course with silver clay - who have either been practicing at home, or done two or more courses previously with silver clay.
The techniques we'll be working with are an intermediate / advanced skill, not for beginners, although students will be able to adapt the projects and progress at their own pace.
What does this course cover
Students will explore more advanced ways to work with silver clay - creating more complex forms such as lockets and rings.
Silver clay is a clever material, made from particles of pure silver mixed with a binder to form a clay like substance that can be modelled, carved and moulded, then refined and fired to burn away the binder, leaving a pure solid silver item. It gives more options for jewellers to bring their ideas to life and requires less specialist tools so is more practical to work with at home than traditional metalwork.
Students will create:
- A decorated ring, to their own design and size - either using s patterned strip of clay, or a smooth rope of clay to create a ring band and then adding further decoration or a stone setting if desired.
- A decorative sculptural form such as a feature bead for a necklace, a locket, an open shadow box type piece, or a hollow form pendant or ring including designing and creating decorations for the outside or inside, joining multiple layers or parts together, and creating a suitable bail, or a way of closing the box.
Students will be supported to plan out their designs, work with the clay, join shapes and layers together, set CZ stones, fire and polish the finished jewellery.
Students can expect to complete at least one advanced piece to their own design, as well as either a series of different small pieces to test ideas or techniques, or a second complex piece, depending on their own design ideas, preferences and progress.
Students will learn to select and obtain materials for future projects. Selecting appropriate tools, equipment and techniques to execute simple designs from idea to completion, as well as about key safety considerations when working with these tools and materials.
What will it be like

- Group discussions
- Hands on practical experience
- Reading handouts and following instructions
- One-to-one and group discussion
What else do you need to buy or do
20g of clay will be provided by the centre included in your course fee. It is possible that you may decide to buy additional silver clay (it depends on how large the pieces you design are, or if you work particularly quickly) and your tutor will direct you to suitable suppliers.
It could be useful to bring a notebook and pen / pencil to record ideas, make any notes and to experiment with design ideas, but this is not essential.
Please ensure you bring your glasses (if you wear them) as there can be a lot of close work.
Closed shoes need to be worn at all times when participating in a jewellery class.
Students may choose to continue their work at home (particularly design work / ideas) between the classes but this is not essential.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
This craft course provider has been awarded Silver status for receiving 5 or more 5 star ratings from previous students.
