No previous experience is necessary as this 2 day course takes you through how to use all 3 types of silver clay, the clay, the paste and the syringe. It also teaches you how to set a fireable stone in 3 different ways.
You will create at least 3 pieces of wearable jewellery.
I am a fully qualified Art clay silver instructor, and am currently a silver clay demonstrator for Cookson Gold in Birmingham
You will learn (or refresh your learning) about handling the clay including rolling out and texturing, along with how to set a fireable stone in clay ready to add to your pieces.
I can help guide you in what you would like to create, but you will have plenty of freedom within the techniques to design your own pieces.
Using the silver clay paste, you will learn how to make a solid silver leaf from a real leaf which can be picked from around the studio, or you can bring one from your home if you have a special one you would like to use. Please note, not all leaves are suitable so please discuss with me if you would like to bring your own
Most of the day will be taken up in designing these pieces and preparing them for the kiln.
Whilst your pieces are drying, you will also design the shape of your filigree piece, and make the template in preparation for day two.
On day two, we will polish and shine the pieces that were fired over night, and also complete the filigree piece using the template from day one. This introduces you to the Silver clay syringe, and explains how fine detail can be added to pieces.
We will fire the filigree piece around lunchtime so you can have time to complete it before the end of the day
The main part of the day will be in learning finishing techniques for your pieces, and looking at adding colour and antiquing to the pieces.
Once the pieces are complete, you can add them to the chain and earwires to make a complete set to take away with you
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
On this online course, it will take place via the best media for us both, and can include zoom, freeconferencecall, facetime, skype etc.
If you don't have the equipment required to complete the online course then a pack is available for a refundable deposit. if you have the equipment, I will send you the materials usually included in the course and a box to put your completed pieces in to return to me for firing.
A laptop, phone or tablet that will support the app, and that preferably works with the audio and video so I can help you if you need it.
(I can help you set it all up if you need any help)
There are a few extra things you will need from your home
- A surface to roll out your clay - this could be an old tile, a baking tray, a coaster, a crepe pan, anything that is flat, smooth and wide enough to roll out your clay
- A pot of water
- Some kitchen towel or equivalent
- a hairdryer to dry your clay
inside your pack will be a box with some vermiculite in, which should keep your pieces safe when you post them back to me for firing, or alternatively, if you have a cooks torch or a gas hob at home, I will talk you through how to fire it yourself, and can even supervise online while you do that if you want me to.

I have just spent a wonderful 2 days on Lori's beginners silver clay course. Having never done jewellery making before I had no expectations of being able to make anything I would be proud of but how wrong I was. Lori is very patient and helpful, explains all the processes clearly and gives you confidence.
Her workshop is very well equipped and organised and Lori times it all so well that you never feel rushed at any stage. At the end of the course I left with pieces I am delighted with and had met some other lovely like minded ladies who were equally as happy with their efforts. I intend to go back and do further courses with Lori and I would urge anyone who is thinking about giving this a try to go to Lori - I can highly recommend her.
This was a great experience tailored to us as individuals. I have a little experience in jewellery making but none in pmc and I felt I learned a lot and would thoroughly recommend the course to both complete beginners and those wanting to extend their skills.
I felt we had a generous allocation of materials to work with and we produced pieces to feel good about!
I had two very good productive days with Lori in her workshop and am extremely pleased with the pieces I made. Lori patiently took me through each stage and taught me lots of new skills. The first day was quite intense (when all the groundwork was done) but the second day was when all the magic happened! I was made to feel at home in Lori's well equipped workshop and look forward to returning again for another course in the future.
This was an excellent course, ideal for the novice. Lori is an superb and very patient teacher and the other ladies in the group made the whole experience perfect. I would highly recommend to anyone to take this course. I am over the moon with all my pieces of jewellery I made.
Thank you Lori.
Lori was a great teacher, very patient and knowledgeable.
I had a great time and look forward to the next course!
We had a brilliant day making a necklace from a leaf, Lori is very welcoming and lovely, she is a fab teacher and makes beautiful jewellery. A relaxing few hours producing a unique special piece, will definitely do another workshop :-)
The course was extremely informative and I came away with many new skills.
Lori is a wonderful teacher and her depth of knowledge is amazing.
Thank you Lori for everything
As a complete novice I really didn't expect to achieve much on my two day beginner course, however I couldn't have been more wrong! Lori is such a great teacher, patient, professional and excellent at what she does. Over the course of the two days she taught me not only every technique that I need to start making my own art clay pieces, but also dozens of hints and tips that she has found due to her extensive experience. Lori is generous and very easy going, putting you at ease from the outset and letting you work at your own pace, whilst explaining every element of the process. I simply cannot recommend her highly enough.
