Silk Painting Workshops at The Mulberry Shed

About the Course
Join me in my studio, The Mulberry Shed, on the Polden Hills in Somerset, and enjoy a fun creative day learning about silk painting using steam-set silk dyes. Experiment with creating your own designs, transferring them to silk and using a variety of silk-painting techniques to produce your own vibrant, beautiful art to wear or hang on the wall. I run Workshops for both beginners and those who wish to develop their skills further. All Workshops are run with a maximum of 3 students to ensure everyone has space to work and lots of time for tuition and asking questions.
For beginners, come along and learn the art of silk painting on ‘An Introduction to Silk Painting Workshop’, where we will start the day by stretching the silk on frames, and have the opportunity to experiment with using the outliner and dyes to create mini works of art on silk handkerchiefs. In the afternoon, or as soon as you feel ready, you will move onto designing and painting your own silk scarf or picture.
If scheduled Workshop dates aren't showing then please do not hesitate to get in touch for new or additional dates.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
The cost includes the use of all equipment and silk dyes, silk handkerchief, scarf or fabric and the steaming process needed afterwards to set the dyes. Free tea/coffee and biscuits provided throughout the day...just bring a packed lunch and your creativity!
Our second course with sheila and immense fun. I have zero artistic skills but it doesn’t matter you can still create a fabulous piece. Mum and I choose to do scarves each time and with sheila’s clear instructions and infinite patience we had beautiful objects at the end of the day. The course is fabulous value for money and both Mum and I would 100% recommend giving it a go even if ,like me, you are not an artist at all.

I had the most incredible time at the Silk Painting Workshop at The Mulberry Shed.
Sheila is the most wonderfully talented artist and teacher as well as being the most lovely person to spend a whole day workshop with!!
I had never done silk painting before and arrived with a couple of vague sketches but not knowing any of the techniques or what you can produce from silk painting. Sheila guided me through everything, starting with a hankie that I used to practice a wide variety of techniques before going onto a bigger piece which I decided to be an art piece rather than a scarf. A week or so after the workshop my silk painting and hankie arrived in the post all steamed, washed and pressed and I love it so so much. I never thought I could create a piece of silk painting art like this before the workshop!
Absolutely lovely day, amazing teacher and an outcome to be very proud of! Can’t wait to go again soon!! Couldn’t recommend enough!

A fabulous day in sunny Somerset.
My friend and I were slightly scared by the thought of this course, neither of us professing to be at all artistic. Not a problem it turned out, Sheila was only too happy to offer suggestions and inspiration which allowed us both to create something beautiful, personal and completely original.
Go to Somerset, admire Sheila’s lovely home and garden, and set your creative self free at The Mulberry Shed, you won’t be disappointed.

This is an excellent course!
It was easy to find as my satnav took me to the entrance of her driveway with plenty of roadside parking available. Sheila herself is very warm and welcoming and her studio is full of silk scarfs, paintings and beautiful examples of her work which is inspiring in itself.
With a much appreciated pot of tea and biscuits all round, Sheila first explains the difference between dyes and paints, the types of silk available for painting and how to steam fix at home. She also showed us some examples of the techniques which we were able to try before swiftly moving on to our first practice piece.
We then had a choice of whether to paint ourselves a scarf or a picture. There were plenty of designs to help us choose and we were helped every step of the way with Sheila offering plenty of good tuition for our own individual styles in a very relaxed and friendly way. She is an excellent teacher!
Sheila fixed, washed, ironed and tissue wrapped our masterpieces and posted them on to us within a few days.
For me, Sheila has taken away all the confusion about the types of paints and equipment as I have wanted to try silk painting for several years and has given me the confidence to buy a few basics to get started at home... a brilliant course for beginners and improvers and very very inspiring!, Thank you Sheila.. I'm loving my new hobby!

Sheila made us very welcome in her lovely Mulberry Shed workroom which was a delight of colour and design. I had never done any silk painting and was keen to see what I could achieve. Sheila took us through the key techniques and materials in a relaxed and easy to understand way, she then helped us individually to structure our art and achieve a really lovely result on silk. It was a lovely way to spend a Saturday and I would recommend Sheila's course, in fact I'd be keen to go again with my daughter.

I bought this wonderful course as a birthday present for friend, and I kept it secret until we arrived. She was very excited and nothing disappointed. We both enjoyed the course enormously and couldn't believe how much we achieved in a day. Sheila provides everything - including loads of inspiration, encouragement and biscuits! My friend is very arty, while I'm not, but we both had a great time. We would love to do it again, and wear our unique scarves with pride!

I really enjoyed taking part in this silk painting course with Sheila. She is a very talented artist, and a patient, excellent teacher. I love my beautiful long scarf which Sheila steamed, ironed and posted on to me in a beautifully wrapped parcel a few days later. I would definitely like to do another workshop so I can make another one! Sheila's workshop is fantastically set up and very comfortable to work in. I wholeheartedly recommend this course to everyone. It was an amazingly fun day

Myself and two friends had a great day with Sheila at the Mulberry shed making a long scarf and a smaller square. We had never tried silk painting before but Sheila set us up and explained the techniques we needed and we each produced some lovely items we were proud of. All the materials we needed were included in the cost as well as tea, coffee and biscuits! Sheila is a great teacher and talented artist and is enthusiastic about teaching others her art. I would recommend this course to anyone. We had a lovely day. Thank you Sheila.

Had a wonderful day at the Mulberry Shed, such a lovely warm and friendly atmosphere, we over ran our time but this was not an issue as we were allowed to finish our pieces without hurrying, would recommend this course to anyone interested in doing this fascinating form of art, cannot wait to see my finished pieces steamed and ready to use. Thank you Sheila for a wonderful day and experience.
