During this two-day course you will have the opportunity to create a collection of three timeless bentwood pieces using beautiful and practical Shaker design principles. These will include a bow-handled carrier for eggs or fruit, a pierced-lid box for garlic or potpourri and a simple tray for morning coffee or evening drinks. The pieces will be made from wood sourced locally in Dorset and the surrounding counties. True to Shaker principles, no previous wood-working experience is necessary for you to be able to take home your own set of Shakerware.
Dorset-based Richard Gibson has been inspired by the simplicity and functionality of Shaker design for many years. Using English hardwoods sourced locally, he makes tactile oval wooden boxes in both traditional and contemporary designs as well as teaching regular workshops both in Shaftesbury and now at Sculpture by the Lakes. The Shakers paid careful attention to the quality of their work; Richard's own designs continue in this tradition in everything he makes.
