In this busy one day workshop at Slamseys, you will learn the techniques of stencil screen printing; working with both positive and negative stencils, focusing on both repeat and block designs. We begin with looking at screen printing repeat designs using smaller screens, with the opportunity to use our thermofax screens, and move onto larger-scale bold designs with our bigger screens. During the workshop you will learn about setting up a studio space, have the chance to explore different inks and print surfaces and practice registering a two colour design. By the end of the workshop you will have the skills and knowledge to get set up and continue printing at home.
You will leave with … an array papers printed with your unique designs. At the end of the workshop an in depth manual will be emailed to you, with a list of supplies and instructions to help you get set up and printing at home. You are also welcome to join our Print Club on the second Wednesday of the month upon completion of the course.
Who is this workshop for?
Beginners with no experience in printmaking and those with a little printmaking experience who would like to refresh their knowledge. There will be a demonstration of each new technique before we start.
All printmaking equipment and materials will be provided and so you don’t need to bring anything with you. You might like to bring along your sketchbook or any special reference material as it helps if you have some design ideas in mind to work from. We will have plenty to inspire you here though, so don’t worry if you don’t have anything particular in mind. For inspiration, have a look at our printmaking boards on Pinterest.
Group size is limited to 4 people to give you plenty of space to work in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. There will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions throughout the course. The workshop will begin at 10:00 so please arrive five minutes beforehand for a cup of tea or coffee. The workshop will finish between 15:30 and 16:00, depending on the complexity of your design and the speed at which you work. Tea, coffee and light refreshments are provided, but please bring along a packed lunch (the nearest supermarket is a five-minute drive away).
Please enquire about screen printing onto fabric.
Our workshops take place in our renovated barn on a working farm in Braintree, East Anglia.
What's included in the price?
All printmaking tools, materials and equipment are included. Tea, coffee and homemade cake is available throughout the day, please advise of any dietary requirements or allergies when booking.
