Start with an old saw and learn how to fix it up and make it work perfectly, as well as look beautiful so its ready for your next project.
Whether you have an old saw that belonged to someone in your family or are simply interested in learning how to bring these lovely old tools back into use, you’ll love this course. Its very satisfying taking a wonky old saw with knackered teeth and polishing and filing them until they are all perfect. Its a form of meditation really, and perfect for a Sunday.
I met Slava at the first ever saw festival in the UK last year. He patiently taught me how to sharpen a saw I’d brought along and I thought it would be great to share him with you! Slava is the source of pretty much all the tenon and dovetail saws in my workshop and he also makes them from scratch so he knows his stuff! The course is led by Slava and I'll be on hand to advise as usual. You can see his saws at greyhoundtoolworks.com.
What will I learn?
How to sharpen a traditional tenon saw (or similar sized saw) by hand that you can then take away with you and use on your next project.
How to sharpen saw teeth with a file.
How to do common repairs and tuning of saw blades.
How to refurbish the handle and brass nuts.
How to set the teeth correctly.
Try out different saw vices, saws and other tools.
Once the saw is ready to use you can try it out on some practice joints.
Who is this suitable for?
Although it might seem quite specialist, and in a way it is, its not out of reach for a beginner to get to grips with and will help you understand the nitty gritty of how a saw works. If you've been woodworking for years you will get a lot out of this too-suddenly you are in control of how your saws are set-up which potentially will improve your work.
Good to know
The class starts at 10am and finishes at 5pm. There is a maximum of 6 students.
Please note - You can bring a saw you already have or you can buy one from a selection chosen by Slava on the day, starting from £20. So if you bring a saw but its too far gone to restore, it wont be a problem.
You can book a place online-just visit my website.
If you will be redeeming a CraftCourses gift voucher on this course, the voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
What's included in the price?
All the tools you'll and materials you'll need. We have a range of equipment so you can try lots of things out. If you don't have a saw to work on you can buy one on the day from a selection in the workshop, starting from £20.
