About the Course
Join us for a one day ceramics taster workshop in Brighton. Suitable for newcomers to ceramics and those who wonder 'Is ceramics for me?'. Hands on one day introduction to ceramics.
Accessibility - small group of 5. Age category 18+
* coiling technique
* slab building
* surface decoration
Coiling is a centuries old Japanese Jomon "rope-patterned" technique. You will learn how to roll and coil clay. I find the slowness of adding coils on coil and shaping them into desired form very de-stressing. This elementary yet charming technique is very flexible.
Pinching is another ancient construction technique and is the most direct method you can have of interacting with clay. You will learn how to manipulate clay with you fingers in your palm into a desired shape. This tactile and relaxing process is a fantastic introduction to ceramics.
Slab building - The earliest use of slab building technique can be seen in Mayan culture. This technique is suitable for constructing more geometrical shapes. You will learn how to to roll a slabs and how to build from these your desired form.
Surface decoration - I will also introduce you to how to texture clay and simple slip decorating techniques such as sgraffitto, painting, slip trailing, and stencils.
Apron will be provided.
The finished pieces will be bisque fired (first firing), glazed and fired again by me. You will need to collect your finished work after 16 April . Alternatively they will be posted to you for an additional fee. Clay is an unpredictable material and may crack during drying or firing. Every care will be taken to avoid this but sometimes it just happens.
Please note - A good level of physical hand ability is required. If you have any mobility issues or pains please contact me before you book. Unfortunately the studio is not equipped to accommodate wheelchair access. Please get in touch about any skin allergies. Working with clay requires short nails.
