A resist dye method, working with hot wax, using traditional tools to create a variety of patterns, marks and figurative imagery on cloth. Painting directly onto the cloth with fibre reactive dyes, to create colourful and expressive designs using this very versatile technique. Suitable for all levels. Batik is a resist dye technique where hot wax and dyes are applied to fabric.
This versatile technique will enable you to explore a variety of designs, patterns, mark making, colours, textures and tones on cotton and silk fabrics.. You will have the opportunity to use a variety of traditional batik tools -tjantings and other mark making tools. You will use Procion P. dyes and a bullet steamer to fix the colours. A power point presentation of traditional and contemporary practices will be shown to contextualise the subject... You will be able to use your batik fabric to make a variety of items - a bag, apron, soft furnishing, garment, wall piece or an accessory, for example. .

The tutor will give a demonstration of various techniques. Informal instruction, guidance and regular constructive feedback. Students will be encouraged to share ideas and do a show and tell.
