About the Course
Learn how to weave narrow bands with Sami style pickup designs on a Beaivi double hole rigid heddle loom. You will be provided with a pre-warped double hole weaving reed (Beaivi Loom). You will learn to understand and interpret the weaving drafts. You will gain practice on how to weave the band and how to pickup and drop the warp threads to create patterns. This workshop is designed for the beginner band weaver.
A double hole rigid heddle is similar to the standard weaving reeds that have one set of holes and one set of slots. These carry the ground weave of the band. A second set of holes has been added above the first set of holes. The top row of holes carry the warp pattern threads and are usually a thicker weight of yarn and are a contrasting colour.
As you weave the band, the pattern threads are lifted to the surface of the band or dropped to run below the surface, creating the patterns. The pattern will be in reverse on the back side of the braid. This technique is similar to the Finnish style of Finnweave or double weave pickup.
Since I was diagnosed with breast cancer several months ago, I have had to reduce the number of workshops that I can provide per month. I am doing better health wise now, but have to be careful not to take on too much at once.
I have a waiting list of those who have enquired about workshops. Your understanding and patience is appreciated.
I usually schedule workshops for Mondays or Tuesdays. If you are only available on the weekend, please let me know and I will try to arrange a suitable time for you.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.
