About the Course

Learn to fire a gas fired raku kiln in our walled garden studio with gallery and picnic area.
Glaze and fire your own pots in a selection of speciality glaze and colours. Lorraine is a post graduate trained potter of 30 years and you will leave with the confidence to carry on working on this medium.
On a Raku firing day you will be provided with all tools, kiln, gas, post firing and reduction materials, in fact everything you need and expert tuition.
Complimentary refreshments of tea/fruit tea/green and black teas/coffee/hot chocolate/biscuit and homemade cake.
Bring up to 10 (check ahead on the maximum size and type of clay etc.) pieces of your own bisque, all glaze, underglaze, oxides etc. included - £85
6 bisque Japanese style yunomi / bowls included for you to decorate, glaze, fire and take away with you - £150

(NB This course is run less regularly than throwing courses as we need to collect at least four students together, but get in touch with proposed dates. If you have a group of three or more we can arrange your choice of day without having to collect further students (i.e. a single payment of £270 or £450 if you want us to provide pots)
Please visit our website for full course details, photographs of the venue and types of work.
A day to discover or hone your talents.
An intensive day to move rapidly forward from whatever point you are in your skills whether you are a beginner or graduate pottery student.
You are welcome to share in my complimentary homemade hot drinks and cakes.
Picnic area indoors or out for good weather and safe free parking.

Your tutor Lorraine, a graduate of Ceramics from Bath Academy of Art, with post graduate teaching qualification and full DBS check.
She has worked in as a production thrower in a Black Country factory, at a company in Stoke and for the last 20 years as an award winning designer maker, for numerous customers including the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Further general information:
Depending on the workshop Lorraine will teach you what you want to know from the basic methods to specific techniques of making and decoration.

Throwing days:
On a throwing day your first five or six pots will dried enough for you to turn and finish later during the day. Lorraine will subsequently bisque fire and glaze with your choice of a stoneware glaze from a selection. Or you could return for a half or whole day to choose and use your own combinations of glaze and colours to complete the process and learn about kiln firing.

For the beginner you will leave having made at the very least five or six thrown, turned, and possibly handled and lidded pots and all you need to arrive with is enthusiasm and possibly a packed lunch.

For more experienced students there will be technical notes on making, glazing, firing and advice of what do do next if you wish. If you have an idea of where you want to be by the end of the day just brief Lorraine ahead of your day.

If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

I recently attended a free short workshop on the Hey Clay day with my children. We really enjoyed the session, Lorraine was very helpful and patient. We came away inspired to try more!

Lorraine is a great teacher and the pottery is set up well to accommodate a group. It doesn't matter if there are mixed abilities as Lorraine caters for each person, supporting them as needed. Her demonstrations are clear and helpful - you learn what to do but also why each step is needed and where common problems arise.
I have been twice and found each workshop to be great fun, relaxing and very satisfying, starting from little experience and building up to a point where I have a collection of pots including a mug and jug that can be used daily. I would highly recommend the course.
I also took my children to a free short workshop on the Hey Clay day - they were delighted to learn how to throw a pot and had two each by the end.

Excellent course and, as a complete novice, I learnt so much. A really enjoyable, relaxed day with fabulous tuition. Lorraine made us very welcome and was a fantastic teacher, helping us all achieve lovely end products. There were enough wheels for us all to use them at the same time and a very generous allowance of clay. I can’t wait to do another session and plan to return again soon.

What a fantastic day! Really should be considered as a local hidden gem! I would urge anyone creative to go visit the studio shop, which is full of wonderful things, as well as booking yourself onto a course! Lorraine is a fountain of knowledge and supports all on the workshop with the highest level of skill. Both Lorraine and her mum were very welcoming, helpful and friendly from initial booking right up to the end of the day. I am looking forward to booking another course early next year to do some Raku firings! :) Thanks Lorraine!

A very enjoyable, productive day. I have some experience at the wheel but wanted to get to grips with some fundamentals that I felt were inhibiting my learning. Lorraine was great at gauging the level of assistance required and establishing the balance between practical and theory with a mixed ability group. It was really helpful to understand the behaviour of the clay and why certain techniques work, or don't. I would definitely recommend the course and look forward to going back to further my understanding of throwing, firing and glazing.

A fantastic day. Lorraine is an excellent teacher, she taught both beginners and experienced students in the same class. I am a complete beginner and was surprised how well we all did. There were five of us on the course and we were able to spend time at the wheel or try our hand at working with moulds.

It is a very satisfying course as Lorriane guides you through each step clearly explaining the techniques, she lets you get on with it and experiment so it's really hands on. Lorraine continually circulates around the students spending equal amounts of time with each of us. With her help on hand all my pots turned out well.

With good facilities and great cake I can highly recommend the course. Great day away from the office!
