About the Course

This is a two part course in wet felt making suitable for beginners and others running on 2 consecutive Tuesday evenings.

Next dates are: 25th Sept and 2nd Oct OR 30th Oct and 6th Nov but if neither of these are suitable contact me regarding flexible dates for groups of 4 or individual sessions.

Session 1 teaches you how to make a flat piece of felt, blend colours, create a simple pictorial or abstract image and prepare for making your 3D vessel.

Session 2 teaches you how to create a seam free 3D vessel using a resist.

By the end of the two sessions one would expect most participants to have made at least one 2D and one 3D felted works. Don't worry if you’re not sure what type of imagery you might want to make on your felt. Heathers home is full of art and design books and if need be she can print an image to adapt.

We accept a maximum of 4 participants at a time - these workshops are designed to provide everybody with plenty of time for one on one attention as well as being flexible to the participants needs.

Heather Fiona Martin is a graduate of Goldsmiths College, University of London. She is an experienced felt maker who for over a decade has worked in educational and community settings. In addition to her community work she runs Purr & Wag It, fine art felted portraits. Heather holds an enhanced DBS certificate for children and vulnerable adults.

Heather has been making felt with people of all ages with many differing abilities for many years now. It’s a simple process (once you know how) but elements of felt making are quite vigorous and very hands on. If you have arthritis in your hands you may find parts of the process challenging. That being said it’s not stopped anybody before and Heather is very happy to help you with vigorous parts of the process.

The workshops run from Heather's home which is on an unmade road a little under ten minutes walk from Denmark Hill station with trains running into Victoria Station, Kings Cross (Thames Link line) and London Overground. A 176, 185 and 40 bus all pass within metres of the house. Free parking can be found on Grove Park and on Camberwell Grove after 6.30pm during the week and at the weekend. On the ground floor of the house with flat access and a downstairs toilet

Allergies to cats or indeed wool? Please note Heather has 3 cats (they’ll be elsewhere in the house during the workshops). Antihistamines are available but the workshops may not be for you.

the course has been amazing... very interesting and very well explained. At the end, we managed to make a felt vessel. The tutor has a lot of experience and can answer any question about felt.
I recommend the course to everyone who wants to have the bases to start felting.

We loved this course. Heather is a great teacher - informative, friendly and relaxed. And a great baker to boot (tea and cake was happily consumed during felt making). All (beautiful) materials were provided and the two workshops took place in a small group of four and an atmosphere that felt like an evening spent with friends. We learned several techniques over the two workshops and left feeling inspired and ready to tackle a larger projects we had in mind when first joining the course. Highly recommended and we would definitely join another course with Heather.

A really fantastic workshop! Incredibly insightful and taught in a way that made it relaxing and enjoyable. I took so much away from the experience, not only my lovely felted pieces but also the skills and knowledge to continue making at home. There was an abundance of beautifully coloured felts to work with and no short supply of tea and biscuits either.
I couldn't have enjoyed myself more and left feeling very inspired.

I loved this course - working with felt is amazing, the colours are beautiful and the end results were much better than I expected. I am not particularly artistic but I produced something I really liked. Heather was very clear and patient and the atmosphere was relaxed and very calming. The location was also great. I now know exactly what to do if I wanted to do felting on my own.

A really interesting and enjoyable course over two evenings. Heather made everything very clear and easy, provided great materials and ensured we all made something we were pleased with. I had never felted anything before but would now like to do more and feel quite confident about starting on my own. I'd also like to do another course with Heather. Highly recommended.
