About the Course
Jim Malone has been making stoneware and porcelain for over 40 years. During that time he has become known as one of the foremost potters working in the Leach/Hamada tradition. He has exhibited widely in Britain and worldwide and work is featured in many public and private collections including the V and A., London.
In essence his own work has always been concerned with understanding what Cardew termed “The Majesty of Form” and the expressive qualities of clay and glaze; Jim has always tried to convey this in his teaching.
Throwing demonstrations and also advance throwing techniques, large bottles, bowls, decoration techniques etc.

The 5-day workshop was just what I needed to get to the next stage in my potting. John’s daily demonstrations of throwing techniques (from basics to advanced) followed-up by his focused and endlessly patient one-to-one coaching of everyone on the course was a recipe for progress. As a relative newcomer to throwing on the wheel I had plenty to learn. I noticed that the more seasoned attendees also benefitted from John’s insightful comments and constructive feedback. It was a pleasure to find someone not only very talented in what he did but equally able to communicate his approach to others with a lightness of touch and a sense of humour. The facilities at the pottery were excellent and Nadia’s enthusiasm and attention to detail made the whole five days a smooth and enjoyable experience. Very highly recommended.

Spent a brilliant week with John not only to further improve my throwing skills but equally important to go back to basics to unlearn some of the bad habits that had crept in. It was really helpful to have a course of mixed abilities and John was always readily available to teach individual potters and it was a joy to watch him demonstrating the finer art of throwing.
The spacious facilities were excellent with good wheels and tools and plenty of good clay to work with. Last but not least Nadia was an excellent and charming hostess who made it all happen and she provided light and healthy lunches.

A brilliant day in a beautiful location in the wilds of Hampshire. The facilities are excellent - with lovely smooth (extremely quiet) Rohde wheels available for everybody and lots of really good clay to practice with. John is an inspiring teacher with boundless amounts of energy and knowledge which he's more than happy to share.
My thanks go to Nadia for all the wonderful location arrangements and to John for imparting his wisdom & guidance.
