About the Course

Individual or couples pottery experiences

This pottery experience is run by me, Fi Chappelle, the maker behind FICH ceramics. At the time of writing (2019) I have been a full-time potter for 2 years and have been giving pottery lessons for just over a year and a half. I absolutely love sharing my passion for throwing and seeing the enjoyment on my students' faces. I run these pottery experiences from my home studio in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

What can I expect?

The process to make a pot is in two parts.

Firstly, relax with a cup of tea/coffee and a few tasty biscuits in the calming, incense infused atmosphere of my studio while I demonstrate the art of pot throwing , take you through the process and answer any questions.

Next, you’ll be up and experiencing first hand the fun and therapeutic benefits of working with clay whilst creating your very own hand thrown pot – and, I’ll be with you every step of the way to ensure you have a pot to take home at the end of our time together.

Lessons usually last for ninety minutes on a one to one basis. Experiences for two people can be arranged as well, these will last around 2 hours. We wont stop until you have made your very own pot so if it takes you longer than this, that's no problem.

The second part of the process happens a few days later, when the pot has had a chance to dry out a bit, it will need to be turned (put upside down on the wheel and carve excess clay off the bottom) and stamped with your name. After your pot has completely dried out, your pot will be fired, glazed and then it will need it's final firing. You can either return to do this or, having agreed the glaze in your initial lesson, or I can complete this stage for you at no extra cost so all you have to do is come and pick up your beautiful, individual pot! There is also the option for me to post your pot to you for a small fee.

When can I do it?

Want to review this course?

Fi is a good kind patient teacher. She explained the pottery techniques well and the use of the pottery tools to me clearly . Pottery throwing was harder to do then it looked as she made it look so simple. But it was a good beginners start course to learning the skill and one I would like to continue. Sally
