About the Course

Spend a glorious week at Flatford Mill on this art residential course, run by the Field Studies Council.

For those who already have a little experience at drawing and painting and wish to improve their portrait work, this is always a most stimulating, challenging and fun week. Working in your own choice of media (watercolours, pastels and/or acrylics), we explore ways to improve accurate drawing skills, and capture a likeness through studying the form, features, composition and pose. Apart from the first "warm up" day, when we work from photographs, we will be working from models all week. As well as constant individual tuition throughout, Carole gives a demonstration on several evenings and group appraisals at the end of each day. Evening activities will include demonstrations in a range of media, or watching a DVD. We will be working in a studio that was once part of the Mill that belonged to the Constable family. The aim is for each student to gain a feeling of accomplishment through increased perception and skills, while enjoying the atmosphere of this historic and inspirational setting.

Carole Massey has been a professional artist for many years and is a versatile and popular tutor who is celebrating her 15th year as an Associate Tutor at Flatford Mill in 2017. She works in a variety of media and her own work includes many celebrated portrait commissions. Carole has written six books, the latest one being Drawing Portraits (Search Press). She is a regular contributor to the Sky Painting Channel and is a Professional Associate of the Society for All Artists.

Flatford Mill lies at the heart of the Dedham Vale, on the banks of the River Stour near the Suffolk-Essex border. The Centre buildings, particularly the Mill and Willy Lott’s House, are instantly recognisable since they feature in many paintings by John Constable. The rich mosaic of lowland landscapes, wildlife habitats and places of historic interest are all reflected in our extensive programme of courses.

The Centre is located between Colchester and Ipswich and is about 10 miles from each, approximately 2 miles from the A12.
