About the Course
This is a full time 35 week photography course leading to a BTEC National Diploma in Photography.
Every aspect of photography is covered here from using a camera, studio, darkroom and digital darkroom through to looking at the work of other photographers and how to present a professional portfolio including both a digital portfolio and a blog. Current photographic practice is discussed and used together with traditional and alternative processes to help you find your own voice. The course is project based, some of which will be live projects with real deadlines. There are twelve units offered in total over the course. These cover the specialist areas and include studio lighting, digital workflows and manipulation, traditional wet darkroom processes as well as contextual studies units looking at the work of other photographers and artists. Uniquely, we offer life drawing (which improves understanding of lighting) and photo etching as part of this course.
An initial 4 week unit brings everyone up to speed with a revision and update on camera skills, basic lighting (including hand held flash) and composition together with an introduction to digital post production and darkroom work.
After that unit, the course leads into studio and location work together with introducing contextual studies and, during November, there is a trip to Paris Photo (the biggest event in the photo calender), this is an optional, but worthwhile.
Later in the course we will introduce digital manipulation using Photoshop and ACR together with traditional wet darkroom work. The course will then include some professional practice, working with real clients, and experimental units together with portfolio development.
All in all, a solid grounding in Photography for those wishing to progress in the industry or go on to study photography at university level.
