About the Course
Residential art holiday at inspirational Flatford Mill, run by the Field Studies Council.
The joy of pastel is colour, control, and speed. Painting with pastels is building layers from dark to light as with other opaque media, whilst drawing with pastels is using lines and linear marks. Come and enjoy using pastels in a variety of subjects including landscape, still life, faces and figures. The weekend will include drawing instruction, perspective, tones and colour theory. Linda will demonstrate techniques and different subjts, you will then have a go. She does not expect everyone to produce the same painting, she teaches the techniques for you to use in your own way, and is used to teaching classes of mixed ability.
Linda Matthews has worked as a full time artist and tutor for over 10 years: her studio and gallery are in the Norfolk Broads. Inspired by everything around her, she enjoys sharing the essentials of pastels in the studio so you can experience fully the freedom of painting from life - en plein air - out of doors, weather permitting. She works professionally in most media. Her philosophy for painting is ‘Wherever you look there is something to paint. You can never be bored with a pencil, a sketchbook and a paintbox’.

Flatford Mill lies at the heart of the Dedham Vale, on the banks of the River Stour near the Suffolk-Essex border. The Centre buildings, particularly the Mill and Willy Lott’s House, are instantly recognisable since they feature in many paintings by John Constable. The rich mosaic of lowland landscapes, wildlife habitats and places of historic interest are all reflected in our extensive programme of courses.
The Centre is located between Colchester and Ipswich and is about 10 miles from each, approximately 2 miles from the A12.
