The marbling workshops are held in James’ Ebru Studio, part of the creative community located in the stunning, newly regenerated Hotwalls studios, Old Portsmouth.
The Hotwalls Studios are located in the unique and important heritage buildings, known collectively as Point Battery, complete with toilet facilities, brasserie/cafe and access to the beach.
Pubs and cafes offering lunch are close by along with a Co-op and lots of outdoor seating.
James’ own journey as an artist is a mix of very informal and intuitive, as well as the traditional and disciplined.
James' Turkish wife, Bahar, introduced him to Ebru in 2009 as a birthday treat, he went on to spend 5 years with Ebru master Kubilay Dincer, learning how to prepare materials and mastering many of the techniques required to produce traditional Ebru.
James has adapted many of these techniques to create his own style, blending traditional with contemporary. He uses digital media to create designs that can be applied to a wide range of products such as pure silk scarves, cards and cushions.
BYO food and alcohol is permitted (sensible limits!)
For larger groups (6/12) arrangements for an alternative venue can be made. Ask for details.
James can tailor workshops for businesses wishing to offer motivational and team building experiences.
James partners with a highly qualified and experienced human resource consultant who specialises in reflective thinking skills, personal and professional development.
The participants will experience a unique, fun and focused workshop combining the creative process with developmental skills applicable to the professional environment. Ask for details.

I really enjoyed my workshop with James. I'd had some experience with marbling before but it was fascinating learning about Ebru and trying it myself under the friendly and enthusiastic guidance of James. I love the fact that this is something you can do without having very much artistic talent and you can still get reasonable results. Of course, the master artists spend years trying to achieve perfection in their art and that's another story entirely. The location of the studio is wonderful and it's a great atmosphere. A real pleasure to spend the day here and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anybody.

Response from James Mouland Ebru Studio:Thank you for your kind words Sam, it was lovely to meet you and share the marbling experience, I hope you make wonderful progress back home! James
I had such a fun day at James' studio learning Turkish Ebru Art. James explained the different techniques very clearly and was very flexible in what you wanted to achieve from the day. The course length was just the right amount and allowed time for rest breaks. James also allowed my fiancé, who came to watch, to have a go at some of the different techniques which was great. This is something I would love to do again in the future and to learn some more techniques. Thanks James!

Response from James Mouland Ebru Studio:Thanks Hollie, you and Sam both did a great job, I hope your future Grand kids enjoy the video archive!
Spent a great afternoon engaged in a one to one Ebru workshop with James. The technique is both relaxing and quite engrossing so the time flew by. By the end of the afternoon I had been able to have a go at many of the Ebru techniques and produced some pieces I was quite proud of. The atmosphere is relaxed and I think you'll be amazed at what you're able to produce, even as a beginner.

Response from James Mouland Ebru Studio:Thanks Karen, I’m so pleased you enjoyed the Ebru Workshop you made incredible progress, your tulips were particularly impressive!
James put on a workshop especially for us two. He made us feel very welcome and kept us supplied in drinks & Turkish delight. He’s a good teacher, he shows you what to do then let’s you have a go. He supervises you throughout the process and we picked it up quickly.
Ebru painting is different to anything I’ve come across before and I would like to have another go sometime.

We had a great afternoon with James. We were both new to ebru and James made us feel very comortable, to a point we were confident enough to play around with different ideas and techniques.
James is a great teacher and adapted his style to what each of us needed, so we got a lot more out of the lesson than we had anticipated.

Response from James Mouland Ebru Studio:Thanks Emma, I'm so pleased you enjoyed the workshop, welcome back anytime.James
I did this course last Friday and it was brilliant. I learned a lot about Ebru marbling techniques and was delighted with what I produced at the end of the day. James was an excellent teacher and made sure that I had a taste of the different aspects and then allowed me to concentrate on those parts I liked best. I came away with not only a real buzz of enthusiasm but also a feeling of relaxation after such an enjoyable and interesting day.
Margaret Ferguson - - #20949
Response from James Mouland Ebru Studio:It was a real pleasure teaching you Margaret, you produced some lovely work by really focusing on the colours and patterns you wanted to achieve, I look forward to welcoming you again.
I did the full day (5 hour workshop) with James. It was fantastic! I've already done a fair bit of marbling and was really looking to develop my skills - this workshop definitely helped me to do this. I took away technical knowledge, new techniques and some very lovely pieces of marbling. I can't wait to put my new skills into practice at home. It was definitely worth the two and a half drive to take part! Thanks James
Helen - - #20862
Response from James Mouland Ebru Studio:It was lovely meeting you and your mum and you both produced some really good work, can't wait to see what you produce at home with your new skills!
Fantastic hour with James in his studio. James shares his amazing talent but also lets you take the lead and let your imagination run wild. Very relaxed atmospshere, i came away feeling very chilled and quite destressed! The one problem with James and his Ebru art is that you instantly want to plan your next session!!! More, more, more!!!
Dawn - - #20551
Response from James Mouland Ebru Studio:Thanks Dawn, I look forward to seeing you again and helping you to nail the perfect pansy!
My wife and I had an incredible day with James. He is extremely knowledgeable and his teaching style is very relaxed, meaning you get maximum time in the hot seat! As total beginners, we were shocked at just how much we achieved and the range of techniques we learnt in one session. Fantastic day with a lovely chap. Would recommend to anyone.
Josef Packham - - #20265
Response from James Mouland Ebru Studio:Thanks Joe, so pleased you and your wife enjoyed the Ebru workshop. I look forward to seeing some snaps of your framed work in your new home!
I've done two 2-hour workshops with James, both times sharing a 'tray' with someone else, which is a great idea. I thoroughly enjoyed both workshops and James is a fantastic teacher, first giving you the basic techniques, then allowing you to 'freestyle' and create your own designs. At the second workshop he guided me through creating a piece of artwork which I was very pleased with. A class in Ebru is something anyone can try and it's great fun... and you don't need any particular artistic talent beforehand - try and be surprised at what you can do!
Ann - - #19874
Response from James Mouland Ebru Studio:Thanks Ann, your progress was brilliant, your final piece was a real triumph!
Wow what a day.
I have just had the most amazing day spent with a talented artist and a very friendly person. I was a bit apprehensive about undertaking this course as I am not artistic whatsoever (you should see my attempts at even drawing a cat!) but as it was a gift from my husband I thought nothing ventured nothing gained. I was so nervous as even though I have admired James' products over the years, I have never tried to to it myself and never once thought that I would get a chance to design something even half as beautiful.
On arrival I received a huge smile and such a welcome that my nerves just flew away. James is a very peaceful and patient person and not once throughout the day did I feel unwelcome or useless. After a short basic explanation of the history of the artform, it was time for me to have a go. Well let's just say my first few attempts were acceptable! However by the end of the day, I now consider myself a master (well in my own family I am!!). I now have 3 wooden items that can be used for various decoration around the house and I also have some lovely A4 sheets that I am going to have framed and put on the wall at home.
I can certainly recommend this course. Beautiful location, talented artist, a new friend has been made and best of all I have some amazing mementos of my day. Give it a go everyone, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
In fact in a few months I am going back to learn even more techniques.
