Contact course provider
About the Course
This one day course is designed to give the student all the fundamental practical skills needed to paint and upcycle furniture to a professional level. This along with the added woodcare knowledge will allow the students to sympathetically restore any piece of furniture whether it’s with paint or naturally.
The student will bring a relatively small piece of furniture to work on which will go through my very own professional process. Acrylic eggshell will be used due to its quick drying times but we will discuss all types of paints in material discussions.
The course covers the following –
Health and Safety
Concept mock up on paper – including colours, design, materials needed
Stripping, neutralising and sanding/woodcare techniques
Stain blocking, priming, knotting and undercoating
Painting, rolling and cutting back techniques
Finishes – waxes, varnishes, stains, oils, polishes
Hardware discussion (student to bring hardware if needed)
Staging and photography
The course is designed for groups of 1 or 2 so to maximise the students learning and for the items of furniture to be finished before the course ends.
If you wanted a bespoke package then we can mix and match to make sure you gain everything you need from the workshop.
If booking with a CraftCourses voucher for part or all of the course fee, please fill in the contact form above or telephone us. Your voucher code must be provided at the point of booking.

As someone new to wood finishing and not sure where to begin, I contacted Jay Blade from Jay and Co asking him for some tips on how to get started. Jay highly recommended Ollie from OP Woodcraft. I contacted Ollie and completed the two-day French polishing course with him at his workshop, which I found extremely valuable. Over the two-days I learnt how to remove existing finishes from wood, how to prepare wood to get a flawless finish and then moved on to work through the different stages of french polishing. We went through different techniques on how to stain, grain fill, french polish and finish wood to achieve a high quality gloss and matt finish. I also learnt painting techniques that showed me how to get a high quality factory finish using a brush. Overall the course was excellent. Ollie expertly explained different techniques and also gave me a list of materials to purchase along with details of suppliers. I would recomend this course to anyone wanting to get started in wood finishing techniques. I would also recommend that you take along a small piece of furniture that you would like to work on and you will be amazed at the stunning results that can be achieved.

I spent two very interesting and informative days with Ollie for a French polishing workshop. He is very patient and the atmosphere is both relaxed and industrious. He was very generous with his time and his knowledge, and I have contacted him since to ask his advice. Ollie clearly loves what he does and I felt lucky to be learning so much from him. I am sure I shall return to learn more.

French polishing & wood care course. I took my own piece of furniture to work on. Felt very welcome & comfortable in Ollie's workshop. We worked way over the planned times to which I am very grateful. Ollie is very patient, generous with his knowledge & time. I have learnt loads, have a shopping list of tools & materials I need. Have workshop envy!!!!!

This course is a superb introduction into woodcare and furniture upcycling. Ollie will show you how to take a piece of furniture that's very much an 'ugly duckling' and turn it into a swan!

Ollie is passionate about wood. His two day course was packed full of detailed information and tips to up cycle old furniture. The take away contact and hints sheets were particularly useful after the event as there are so many skills to take on board over two days. His kind, calm, unassuming manner makes you feel less of a novice from the start. He takes time to talk through your ideas and will demonstrate different techniques whilst your working piece is drying. He has exacting skills, and enjoys modern design as well as treasuring the history of cherished furniture. I would willingly spend time under his tutorage again as his knowledge is vast and his stress free way of working suited me well. Thank you.
