About the Course
The concept for the course is to focus on painting fabric as a base for embroidery, introducing participants to using silk paints on woven and non-woven fabrics. You will be encouraged as participants to take inspiration from local wild flowers and the landscape and be led through a design process to create up to three small pieces of work suitable for framing. If the weather permits, we will add in some sun printing with dyes and/or cyanotype chemicals. The cyanotype prints would be on cotton and suitable for incorporating in larger wallhangings, home furnishings or clothing if preferred.
Each workshop provides the equivalent of 3 and a half days' teaching plus two outings to places of interest during the week. There is a maximum of 6 pupils per class meaning that each student has plenty of one to one tuition and expert guidance.
About the tutor Yvonne Elliot, in her own words
I am a mixed-media textile artist based in Milton Keynes where I have a studio with Arts Central. City and Guilds trained, but with an academic background in Russian Studies, I have enjoyed improvisational stitching since childhood.
When my children were small I trained as a teacher of adults, eventually becoming a manager with Community Learning MK, where for many years I co-ordinated an extensive Arts programme and met hundreds of inspirational tutors and students.
My current work draws on former interests through memories of the natural and built environments I have lived in or visited, resulting in series of layered, stitched and embellished abstract landscapes. My choice of materials is affected by the seasons and most of the fabrics I use are hand-dyed or painted to achieve the colour range I require. I like to use a broad range of techniques, though I most enjoy the final ‘slow stitching’ phase of hand embroidery. My artist influences are varied and include poets, painters and set designers from the extraordinarily fruitful early 20th century as well as contemporary artists. I am a member of both the Quilters Guild and the Embroiderers Guild, and with Jane Charles and Hilary Grayson exhibit locally and regionally as Mix3dStitch.
