This is a weekend course at our workshop in the Witherslack Valley, handcrafting your very own locally sourced Ash paddle from the Lake District.
On this weekend you will learn how to select a suitable section of the tree whilst considering its grain direction and character; you will then go on to choose a design of paddle to outline on your Ash plank and start to shape the wood using traditional hand tools. By the end of the workshop you will walk away with your own beautiful yet practical Ash paddle.
We have a selection of paddle designs to choose from at the workshop to be inspired by. Designs from North America where paddles were and continue to be a big part of traditional travel, fine tuned to suit the desired movement on their waters, but also customised to suit the person individually.
Carving a paddle is a personal and rewarding experience. It might be something of a gift to someone, to tie a room together as a work of art or to be your old faithful by your side on countless canoe trips.
Ash wood when chosen right will provide a strong and sturdy paddle that will last.
All food and drink will be included on this course including all the tea, coffee and soft drinks you can drink to keep you going. There is nothing better than getting lost whilst carving wood and just when you need it, good food appears!
Please let us know if there are any questions as to whether this workshop is for you.
