Stained glass workshop session (copper foil method): beginners and improvers welcome

X

Description

Already had a taste of the versatile art of stained glass (copper foil/'Tiffany' method only) and would like to improve your skills? Or maybe you want to expand your range beyond suncatchers to a large variety of options? Maybe you are a confident beginner, have cut glass before, or are familiar with decorative soldering?

Then this 'open workshop' day with flexible learning and individual project-making is perhaps just the thing you've been looking for!

You will have advice and guidance on hand throughout the day but will be more able and confident to work with less guidance than my 'flagship' 2 person workshops (see other listings or contact me for details if you think more individual attention is right for you).

Suitable for both confident beginners or improvers in a maximum group of 4

Hands-on help and advice can be given with any or all of these processes throughout the workshop:

* Preparing stained glass design patterns
* Choosing and cutting glass
* Using the glass grinder to finish glass shapes and their edges
* Adding copper foil to the glass outline shapes
* Creating a solder join to attach the stained glass design shapes together
* Adding a solder bead to the surface of the copper foil joins
* Adding hanging rings or display fixings
* Strengthening designs where 'hinges' have been formed in the pattern
* Patinas and their uses
* Finishing and polishing
* Health and Safety when working with stained glass techniques
* Working with lead-free solder
* 3D designs (eg boxes, models and geometric shapes
* Lanterns
* Jewellery (using lead-free solder)
* Attaching plant rods/stakes and attaching to hoops
* Using wire and solder decoratively
* Spinners
* Making Memory pieces eg pet prints, children's drawings, and footprints
* Creating celebration pieces for engagements, Weddings, Birthdays etc, including methods of adding text/dates
* and more...! Please just let me know what you'd like to make and we can make a plan.
Please note that this Workshop does not include the cost of glass for your designs. This means you are free to come for several sessions to work on larger projects spread over more than one day, or perhaps to choose to create several smaller pieces of stained glass.

You will have the choice of pre-ordering 'special' glass of your choosing for a design that you would particularly like to create, using specific colours and types of glass. Or you will be welcome to be more flexible to select patterns from my pattern book and the glass available from my more limited stock collection on the day.

When you have booked, I will contact you to confirm which option you'd like - please note that to order glass in for your projects we will need a minimum of 7-10 days depending on the supplier and availability of glass.

You are also free to bring your own glass to work with (perhaps you have bought some supplies and not got round to using it yet or want some help with cutting/soldering skills before you do so).

Please note that although we are working with copper foil and not more traditional lead came to join the pieces of stained glass, the solder which we normally use in the workshop contains lead.

We would advise that this Workshop is unsuitable for attendance during pregnancy or breastfeeding - please ask your Doctor for advice before booking if you have any conditions which concern you.

You will be provided with safety equipment including eye protection, dust mask for glass grinding, gloves for lead solder work, disposable gloves for use with patinas, and (most importantly) plenty of ventilation.

We politely request that Health and Safety advice is followed as instructed and safety equipment provided is used.

Manual dexterity is needed for creating stained glass - you will be offered as much help and support as you need during the day to be able to complete your stained glass creations, although we cannot guarantee that you will complete your designs in one day and you may need to book further sessions or complete your designs at a further point elsewhere.

Please bring your packed lunch. Hot & Cold drinks are available throughout the workshop session.

If you prefer to work in a series of shorter half day sessions, please contact me for availability.

Cancellation and a full refund can be obtained up to 4 weeks before the course starts. Start dates may be amended on request.

What's included in the price?

All tuition, tools (including the necessary protective equipment), and supplies EXCEPT GLASS is included (so copper foil, flux, solder, patina, basic wire, and other consumables).

Payment will need to be made for glass on the day of the workshop (cash or card only), ordered and paid in advance for special orders, or you can bring you own suitable stained glass.

You will also have access to my pattern book to choose designs and a variety of free patterns from the internet for personal use.

Please bring your own packed lunch (to be eaten away from your work table in designated 'clean' areas). Hot & Cold drinks are available throughout the workshop session..

If you wear reading glasses, please remember to bring them!

Please also bring warm clothes, preferably layers, to allow plenty of ventilation during the workshop.

Please wear clothes suitable for crafting, preferably made from heavy cotton such as denim or heavy cotton 'lumberjack' shirts (or something similar which will protect you as you work with glass and solder).

Please wear sturdy footwear (no open-toed footwear please).

If you have a sturdy workshop apron such as used by woodworkers and metal workers, please feel free to bring this, along with any personalised safety equipment e.g prescription safety glasses or your own mask suitable for workshop use, especially dust and vapour masks.

If you would prefer to work in a series of shorter half day sessions, please contact me for availability.
