I am very glad that I decided to come to Jamal’s workshop for a 4-Day intensive stained glass course. I needed to use up my holiday in 2019 and decided on learning a craft in this time. Myself and my mother came across this course and I went with it!
I have always found the stained glass in buildings one of my most favourite aspects of it, so learning in the flesh the process of their crafting was fabulous. We received a bit of a history of both stained glass making and also of Jamal’s working time at the Hardman studios. Both of these factors was a great introduction to our time!
We had to bring a design to make on the course, I had made one but also had created a tile design a while back from inspiration in the Jackfield Tile Museum in Ironbridge in the Arts and Crafts Morris style which he spotted and recommended doing as my first piece. I am very glad he did as it brought to life a concept I had made! It was a very effective design and also challenging!
We learnt various things on the course ranging from cutting of the coloured pieces of glass to fit into the blocked out ‘panes’, to ensuring these were the correct size for leading. We also learnt using browns and blacks painting to both shade and block out some of the painted designs on our works. Mine had lots of naturalistic shapes including leaves and a squash on it where I successfully made it shaded so it looked 3D which I was amazed at by the guidance of Jamal. We also finally did the leading of the piece, which the other two had done previously on a 1-day course and practiced at home with own pieces between times. Jamal was very useful in guiding me on this, so I completed getting my 21 glass pieces together with few issues including successfully teaching me soldering and cementing techniques which I hadn’t done before either ever in my life.
It was fabulous also to see Jamal’s work as inspiration including a commissioned piece for someone’s private collection of Sikh devotional items. It was a beautiful sight in the flesh!
I am currently working on some designs of pieces to create before I venture into buying kit to make it with, I think it may become an addictive pastime!
I would like to thank both Jamal and his wife Somia for making us welcome in their home alongside the rest of their family including on the weekend with plenty of cups of tea!
As I typed to Jamal after the course “Tumhara duniya ek rangeela duniya hai! Bohat shukran ke liye meri duniya bohat rang bana, aur nahin andhera!” meaning “Your world is very colourful. Lots of thanks for making my world more colourful and not dark!” This has been fabulous in a difficult year for me, a good hopeful end to 2019 and a start of new colourful hobby for 2020!
Thank you very much Jamal and family!

Response from Stained Glassic:Hi Emily,
I had a fabulous 2 days with Jamal. Jamal is very knowledgable/professional and very friendly. The course was not pressured at all. Jamal managed easily to be able to spend lots of time with all 3 of us over the 2days. Answered all of my questions. I learned loads. And was chuffed to walk away with my stained glass project that I never realised I could make. Highly recommend this course. And hope to come back again soon. Thanks!

A privilege to be taught lead work by a true artisan. I came away from the day confident and inspired to continue with my stained glass work at home. Jamal was a patient and talented tutor and gave me many valuable tips on how to cut glass and use lead.

Response from Stained Glassic:Dear Simon & Helen, Thanks very much for your review. I am so happy that you loved your stained glass course. Best Regards, Jamal Rafay
I’ve been meaning to do a course like this for ages and was going to do a course in Bristol, but never quite got around to it. Then my wife bought me a one day course for my birthday. I’m glad I waited now as I just loved Jamal’s leading course. He has such a cosy workshop in his back garden which has everything we needed to complete the day course. He’s such a great teacher and took us through every step of creating our first piece. I even surprised myself! Just shows how good Jamal was at explaining the various techniques. I would highly recommend this course.

I took a 3 day course learning to paint shade and leading of stained glass. It was a fantastic experience and I enjoyed every minute of this excellent course. I left feeling very confident with all the help and support given to continue developing my own designs in stained glass and leading work. I highly recommended this course to everybody.
Chris Horwood - - #22826
A great day for myself and my wife.
Jamal took us through the history and his own experiences in the field, before then assisting and guiding us in the creation of our pieces on the day.
Stephen Kissane - - #22812
I did the one day course which was an excellent introduction to stained glass covering the history, design techniques, tools and materials involved. This was done in the relaxed atmosphere of Jamal's workshop where we we received practical experience by being guided through each of the processes involved to finally produce our own individual work-pieces.
A thoroughly enjoyable day and a springboard for the extended glass painting workshop and for taking up this craft as a hobby.
Richard Faithfull - - #22811
I had a great time on the one day leaded glass course. Jamal is a friendly, patient teacher with a wealth of experience which he shares with generosity. I came away feeling like I can have a go by myself at home and absolutely love the little panel I made during the workshop. Am keen to follow up with the glass painting course too. Highly recommended. Thanks Jamal.
Stephanie Stump - - #22805

Reg and I did a one day stained glass leading course with Jamal, we had a fantastic day, Jamal is a very good teacher and shares his knowledge in a very friendly way. Reg has since bought glass, lead, etc and is busy making a flowered stained glass in his garage, he has caught the bug. I would certainly recommend anyone to have a go. Also whilst you are there check out Jamal’s drawings, I bought one, picking it up next week and looking forward to hanging it on my wall, he is a fantastic artist.

What a stunning day. I brought my wife and daughter and together with Jamal we created some beautiful stained glass and wonderful memories. Jamal is a true artist. Being able to discuss his work with him and hear about his thought processes was life enriching and I'm so glad I was able to share it with my family. Not only that, but the path ahead to making more stained glass on our own is now clear! Jamal has set an inviting and inspirational stage to continue work on our own. Highest marks.
Thomas Hills - - #21277
A most enjoyable, informative and satisfying day. We’d never done anything like this before, but Jamal was excellent at showing and teaching us what to do- such a talented man!
Claire Ann Lane - - #21116
An outstanding day delivered by a real craftsman who took time to ensure I was able to produce a high quality stained glass panel. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time with a view to producing more panels at home as a hobby, I am so pleased I found Jamal as he has filled me with confidence. I can't wait for my birthday to get my next voucher to attend the glass painting course he runs.

I thoroughly enjoyed my day with Jamal. His enthusiasm for his art was clear and I learned a lot in just one day. Each step of the process was explained well, and as beginner I felt totally at ease to ask questions if I wasn't sure.
Sharon Murphy - - #20964
I went on the one day course with Jamal. I had never done any stained glass/ lead work before and he was an excellent teacher. The day was shared with on other pupil and was very satisfying.
barry - - #20826
Well, what can I say about this very patient and highly informative person; Jamal was a fantastic teacher and his knowledge is incredible. I had never cut a piece of glass or held a soldering iron in my hand previously, but his gentle guidance through the process was just what I needed to create my first piece of art. I would thoroughly recommend anyone to attend , I feel confident to carry on and create my own work positively. The other participant was great and the studio was relaxing to work in and didn't feel intimidated in the slightest. What a wonderful day, one I will remember for a long time with pride. Well done Jamal, I will definitely attend the glass painting course.
Juliet Batten - - #20491
I completed Jamal's leading workshop with my husband a few days ago. We've done a similar course before but we were very happy we chose to visit Jamal.
It was a pleasure to learn about Jamal's background in art and producing beautiful windows for projects all round the world.
We learnt a lot and feel confident to pursue our own projects now.
I can't wait to return for his glass painting workshop.
Ruth Crawford - - #20364
A very interesting day was spent in Jamal's workshop for a leading workshop. You cannot dispute the knowledge and experience that Jamal has and takes you through during you workshop. It was extremely enjoyable and interesting learning about the stained glass process and I have a greater found new respect for artists in this field. We were able to take away our pieces that we had made during the day with pride. I would highly recommend this to anyone who has ever been interested in stained glass and its techniques.
Juliette Haines-Currie - - #19765
Thoroughly enjoyed the Leading Workshop. Jamal's instructions were clear and concise. His demonstrations were informative and easy to follow and put me at ease immediately. The six hours flew by and it was lovely to have a finished product to take home. Thank you
Sharon Ward - - #19728
Had a wonderful time. Jamal has great experience, and the stories he tells of his past is enthralling. He passes his knowledge on very well, and the way he shows you the steps required to make your own piece of stained glass makes it easy to learn.
I would highly recommend this course to anyone who would like to give stained glass making a try.
Andrew - - #19593
It was a real privilege to spend a day with someone as skilled and talented as Jamal. As someone who loves bring creative but who lacks any natural artistic talent this course was perfect fit me. He patiently took us through each step of the stained glass leading process. His instruction was clear and his level of support just right. I would never have believed I would be carrying hone my own little price of lovingly crafted leaded stained glass at the end of just one day! Spending the day in his cosy little studio, with classical music playing softly in the background, thinking about nothing other than crafting my piece was almost like therapy. I felt totally relaxed when I got into my car to drive home.
I am considering taking up Stained Glass as my new hobby as I enter semi-retirement. I know enough to get started tomorrow but need to decide whether my commitment is strong enough to justify the initial investment in all the tools and equipment.
Jackie Small - - #19586
I had a fabulous day spent at Jamal's one day leading workshop. It is something I have been wanting to do for ages and was not disappointed. I was an absolute beginner but he was very patient and he explained clearly each step as we went along. Help was always on hand when needed, and I was thrilled with my creation! Am certainly now inspired to carry on doing this at home. I can thoroughly recommend Jamal's workshops.
Celia Thomas - - #18123
I attended the one day leading course with absolutely no previous experience. Jamal explained all the processes with authority, incredible knowledge and patience. I found the whole day absolutely compelling and finished with a completed work as a keepsake. The day with Jamal has definitely fired my enthusiasm to continue with this work. Highly recommended to any one with an interest whatever your experience. Many thanks
Roland Harrison - - #17993
Jamal explained everything in great detail, and was extremely patient. Myself and my friends all enjoyed the experiance and felt as though we learned a great deal. The 6 hours absolutely flew by! I highly recommend this course and Jamal in particular. I will definitely be considering more of his stained glass workshops :)
Elizabeth - - #17582
I booked the day as a treat for my friend and I to celebrate my birthday. We found Jamal to be an absolute artist and craftsman - thorough and professional and VERY patient! We started off with little idea of what we were going to do and ended up (having tweaked the design, chosen the colours, cut the glass, cut the lead, pieced it together, soldered, cemented and cleaned) with a lovely panel that will always remind me of this big birthday. Jamal has a studio in his garden and it is very well set up and organised. We felt that we had a good amount of his time as there were just 2 of us so he was always on hand when we got stuck! We were fortunate enough to see a stained glass window that he has just designed and completed for a church in Plymouth - having had a go at the process I now have much more appreciation of the work that goes into them and am even more impressed! I would highly recommend this for a memorable and rewarding experience. Thanks Jamal
Heather Badham - - #17135
We were a family of 4 with no prior experience in stained glass leading but we were looking forward to a different experience. It was an excellent day and we were extremely glad of having done this together. Jamal was extremely patient and encouraging and gave all of us some tips and tricks to make our panels look good. Jamal is an extremely talented artist himself and it was also fantastic to talk to him about his work.
Tina and Melwyn - - #16701
Just want to take the opportunity to thank Jamal for a truly wonderful day...my sister and I attended the one day leading course. To be honest, not really sure what to expect... possibly a ready to assemble stained glass kit? We could not have been more wrong 😀 cutting glass, cutting lead whilst receiving guidance from an informative and patient teacher. The icing on the cake.. I have my own piece of artwork in my kitchen that reminds me of a wonderful day. I would wholeheartedly recommend a workshop, trust me I'm not an 'arty type' and it did not matter as I thoroughly enjoyed the experience...Jamal explains the processes, provides assistance in a very genuine way. Many thanks 😁
Sharon Davis-Owen - - #16628
Where to begin, what a fantastic day, I made a stained glass panel from scratch! Jamal is a very patient extremely talented man. His work is second to none.,and you are left in awe of this very humble guy. I learnt to cut glass and lead correctly and keep my fingers, not easy when you are a left pawed person lol.
If you get a chance book a course its worth every penny and more. The William Morris cups are a wonderful touch :)
Miss Karen Wright - - #16617
Having booked this for my wife's birthday, I arrived at Jamal's workshop with little artistic flair of my own but came away having had an amazing day holding my very own stained glass panel. Even though I found the early stages of glass cutting frustrating, Jamal patiently talked me through the process with an endless supply of positive reinforcement, hints and tips. Even though he holds a wealth of experience and knowledge, at no point did I feel intimidated or inadequate. His enthusiasm for the creative arts is apparent and I am hoping to join him again for another workshop in the future! I can highly recommend this workshop for true beginners and experts alike as I am certain Jamal would adapt his approach to any customer who is willing to share the day with him.
Matt W - - #12336
Response from Stained Glassic:Thanks Matt, You are most welcome to come again!
Jamal's workshop was excellent. He was a great teacher and helped us throughout the process, showing infinite patience and amazing skills. We left with two beautiful pieces of stained glass which we are so proud of. I would wholeheartedly recommend the course. We both had a great day with Jamal. A big thank you to him for making the day a real treat.
Theo and Lucy - - #12094
With no glass experience and little drawing skills, I embarked on the full Monty 4 day course. Jamal was friendly, supportive and helpful and guided me through the whole process of selecting from a handful of designs , planning and cutting , painting, shading, leading and finally cementing and polishing. Have left with some lovely pieces that I may have to keep for a while (were going to be gifts) and a head full of ideas for future projects.
angie willems - - #11822
I did a 1 day leading course with Jamal and what a brilliant day it was! Jamal is creative, knowledgeable highly skilled and patient. I went with an idea and a photo and came away with a piece of art! There was a large selection of different glass to choose from, both in terms of colour and texture. The studio is covered in interesting art and glasswork, made by Jamal. This was a great experience and I cannot think of a single negative thing to write. All that's left is to say Thank You!
Pete - - #11573
The one day leading workshop yesterday was highly enjoyable and satisfying. I had never worked with stained glass before but Jamal instilled confidence from the start and was an inspiring teacher. I came away with a completed piece which was way beyond my expectations and is already on display in our home. A truly memorable day and an experience which I would recommend most highly to anyone., even as a beginner.

Thank you, Jamal, for a very helpful, informative and professional day completely tailored to my needs and interests. I was able to practise and understand a great deal about painting figures on stained glass, the tools and equipment needed and felt I was able to make major steps in a very short time. Thank you for your patience and dedication as a teacher and your great skill as a craftsman; I hope to return for help with the next stage as soon as I can.

Excellent 60th birthday present. Wonderful day, learnt a lot in a day. Jamal is very patient and has great deal of historical and practical knowledge which he was happy to share. He is clearly enthusiastic about his art and has kindled the need for me to find out more. I will try hard to get on the four day course.
Sharon Woodland - - #10026
