Get started with armature needle-felted creatures in a relaxed, easy to follow step by step process in this live one-to-one online workshop split into TWO 2 hours sessions with 'homework' in between (NOT a pre-recorded video).
Armature is wire work which provides a structure for your felt animals, making them repositionable as well as adding a strong, self-supporting base for larger creations.
Learn to use different kinds of felting wools and fibres to create my most popular armature workshop animal, a moon-gazing hare.
I will contact you within 24 hours hours of your purchase of this online workshop to arrange your individual sessions for a mutually convenient date and time (7 day a week availability 9am-9pm). If you have any questions before or after purchase please let me know - happy to help!
We will also check you have the materials which you need (please contact me to do this in advance of purchase if you are unsure). If you are in the UK I have felting wool suitable for this project which you can purchase for posting to you and we can arrange your sessions for when you have received it by Royal Mail First Class Post. I also have other felting supplies if you require them too.
In the first of these two 2 hour workshops, we will start in session one by building the armature (wire work) for your hare and attach the core (inside structure). Then we will begin covering the hare with the felted fur. Your 'homework' will be to finish adding the fur ready for the second session.
In the second session we will add all the features, learning methods of making realistic eyes, adding characterful faces, best methods of making ears and paws, and finally adding the hare tail. You will most likely need to finish some of these after this session but you will know how to do this from the demonstrations and your practice in the session - and you will also be invited to an online group just for Workshop attendees where you can continue to ask questions about needle felt making, any issues which you may be having with finishing your hare, or to ask for any further advice which you may need. And where you can also share your lovely finished felt hare too!
If you are new or quite new to needle felting, the first session will be 2 hours PLUS up to an additional 30 minutes at no additional cost so I can make sure you have plenty of time to get the felted basis to the hare complete without you feeling rushed.
We will be covering all the following:
What equipment and supplies do you need
Which fibres and colours are suitable for suitable for needle felting your hare
Felting Needle types and gauges explained so you can choose the most suitable ones for this project
Making the armature (wire structure) and how to cover it easily
Shaping the core (inside) base for you to build on eg body shape
Joining core shapes together easily
How to add needle felt fur to the surface of your core design
Techniques for adding needle felt details such as ears, tails, paws, and legs
How to deal with the tricky bits - making realistic eyes, nose, making repositionable ears, shaping paws, and adding the tail.
Finishing your felt hare, with techniques to remove excess fuzz (or to add fluffy surface if needed in areas)
Ways to display your felt hare
Suppliers of felt making equipment and consumables (UK)
You will also receive the PDF instructions which you can add your own notes to and refer back to in between or after your sessions.
When you have the supplies and equipment ready, we will schedule your sessions so you can 'craft-along' with me during the demonstration and you will have access to the video replays after our one to ones so you can carry on with your felt work to complete the piece which you've started.
You will also be invited to an online group just for Workshop attendees where you can continue to ask questions about needle felt making, any issues which you may be having with finishing your hare, or to ask for any further advice which you may need. And where you can also share your lovely finished felt hare too!

The technique was demonstrated and explained really well. If anyone was finding something tricky, Sally took the time to explain it to them until they mastered it. Sally lead the course at our pace, never rushing us. She encouraged us all throughout and we all had a sleeping mouse to take home! I will definitely be booking on future courses. Thanks Sally.
Thank you for coming to the needle felting course Emma, it was a pleasure having you attend. Thank you very much for your lovely review and I look forward to seeing you again soon.
Another great day, this time learning needle felting. Sally was very patient and encouraging with our efforts. Everything was provided, even tea and coffee, and the work taken at our own pace so that we all came away with a lovely chirpy robin. Sally is an excellent teacher and I shall be going back for more very soon.
Thank you Sally for a very enjoyable day learning needle felting techniques. I thought I would find it difficult but with Sally's clear explanation, demonstration and encouragement I was able to make a cheeky little robin at my first attempt. It was a very relaxed day with plenty of coffee, biscuits and laughs along the way. I will definitely be booking on a future course and hopefully bringing a friend too.
I came home from this course absolutely buzzing and I was so proud of my first needle felted creature; I made a cute mole in a plant pot with a flower. Sally was very patient with us all and made you feel relaxed and confident that you could do it. Sally gave thorough explanations of the various techniques needed and I definitely feel that I could tackle another project on my own. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable day and I had a lovely little friend to take home with me. Thanks, Sally! 😊
You are very welcome September - I am so pleased you learnt the skills to confidently carry on at home, and also enjoyed the day. Your mole in the flower pot was lovey - and the attention to detail with adding the ladybird was fantastic :)
See you again soon,
I attended this course with my mum as and early Mother's Day present and we had a fantastic day. Sally is lovely; she really wants you to get the most of out the day and we were not told what to make, we were asked what WE would like to make. Sally really wanted everyone to leave at the end of the day with having made something that they love. Some of us made cute moles and some of us, including me, made sleeping foxes.
Sally is very good at explaining technique (and funny, too!) and she is patient and encouraging; perfect for complete beginners like us!
Both mum and I came away with a cute creatures and a great feeling of achievement. I keep looking at my fox thinking "I made that!". My mum really enjoyed making her mole and had a great day. I highly recommend this course and I am now looking at Sally's other classes, because I know that they will be excellent. Thank you, Sally.
Had a wonderful time on this day course. Was a complete beginner and despite being an enthusiastic amateur where brain/eye/hand co-ordination is practically non-existent, I came away with a completed woodland animal that looked close to what it should look like! Sally was extremely encouraging and was able to put me right without me being aware of it. We were able to work at our own pace amongst a small friendly group of like-minded people and the time just whizzed by. Got the bug and will be back for more!
I was lucky enough to have this course bought for me, what a lovely present! I had a wonderful day. Sally is a lovely tutor, so full of knowledge, encouragement and humour! We worked in a small group of people and were able to choose what we made. We all chose either a mole in a pot or a sleeping fox but I think if we all had chosen something different Sally would have taken it all in her stride. I made a fox which actually looks like a fox! I learnt a new skill and I’m definitely going to do more. I thoroughly recommend this course and I will be back for more, hopefully the wet felting later in the year!
I attended the introduction to needle felting and had a great day. Salt was a fantastic teacher. She was really encouraging, friendly and made you at ease straight away. The workshop was really good value for money and I will definitely be looking at doing another workshop on the future. Thank you Sally
I thoroughly enjoyed the needle felted teddy bear workshop. Sally was very welcoming and I felt at ease throughout the day within a small friendly group of like minded people keen to learn a new skill. Sally was a very good tutor, very patient and demonstrated all aspects of making the teddy bear clearly and simply. We all completed a little teddy bear on the course and I went away having learnt a lot more about needle felting. I highly recommend this course for anyone who has never needle felted before or for those who already have some experience.
Had fantastic day with Sally, excellent tuition and a small class which means we had lots of attention. I came away with a very sweet reindeer in time for Christmas. Would thoroughly recommend this workshop.
Really enjoyed the day creating a wet felted pot and picture. Sally gave good instructions and as it was a small group was able to give advise through the production of each piece. It was a very friendly environment with tea, coffee, biscuits all provided by Sally. I will be back for more classes.
Thank you for your lovely review Tracy ~ we did have a very enjoyable, creative day! Look forward to seeing you again soon,
Thoroughly enjoyed the wet felting course. Sally is very patient and has a great sense of humour! She is an excellent teacher and very encouraging. A highly recommended course to do. Thank you so much, Sally!
Thank you so much Angela ~ and thank you for coming to the wet felting workshop. We had a very enjoyable day and you all made such great pieces of wet felt. Look forward to seeing you again soon :)
I attended Sally's course on needle felting a teddy bear. It was my first introduction to needle felting. I had a fantastic day with Sally and others. Sally is an excellent tutor - very welcoming, well organised, clear with her instructions and demonstrations. She has given me the confidence to continue. I'm already planning to attend new courses with Sally to develop my needle felting skills. Sally has been inspirational. I would recommend Sally's workshops.
Thank you for your lovely review Barbara and thank you for coming to the workshop ~ it was a really enjoyable day. I'm looking forward to seeing what you make in the future with the Teddy Bears and also to seeing you on some more Workshop days soon!
Another great experience with Sally. This was my second experience at needle felting with Sally. I was able to reinforce first skills learnt and progress to new skills. I came away being able to make a cute bird. I was thrilled. Sally was very patient with my partner and supported him well. He was thrilled with his adorable robin. It was his first ever crafting experience. Many thanks Sally.
